Because they aren't very smart and don't realize that the 400 and 800 are two very different events, particularly for people who are almost entirely fast twitch.

This. People see a skinny white dude running 43.5 and automatically conclude he's 1:42 material. A black guy with the same career path and same physique would not be widely pressured to move up.
I *do* think Wariner would be a great 600 guy, but last time I checked that was a novelty event.

He's thin, and has run 43.4. He runs a very patient 400 and finishes hard. This leads me to believe he's patient enough to sit back and wait in an 800. I don't base this on skin color because it is very clear black people are better distance runners. You can build a respectable enough base strength in a year if he wants to give it a serious go. I would be surprised if he could break 1:44, but is a 1:44.01 really that bad for someone who can only manage 45 second 400s?
Do remember that the current World Record and American Record holder in the 800 are black. I think that the OP was suggesting a way to extend Wariner's career and bring more interest to our sport. I did a simple search and found that people did inquire about Johnson running the 8 years ago and last time I checked he's also black. So I'm going to conclude that as track fans we have an interest in seeing great quarter milers give the 8 a shot. This has noting to do with race you douche.

This and the fact that having been under Clyde Hart's program which is more of a strength based program than most sprint programs. 200m-1k repeats are common depending on the time of year. Def not typical for 400 runners. Would be a great foundation for a 400 guy to move up. But I think he's done.
800!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It doesn't hurt to attempt... they should just stick him in the final. Outside of lane 5,6, or 7 shall do fine. :D

He ran a 44.13 world lead in 2010, He was injured 2011, and he has clocked at 20.53 for 200m in bad conditions in his pre-competition period.
This is where you guys show how little you know about track. If he is running 20.53 pre-comp he is likely in 20.2 shape or faster at the moment for 200m. His 200m Pb is 20.19 so his speed is no differant now to what is has been his entire career. He is 28 FFS.
He ran low 20's as a teenager so he wasn't juicing to get the speed he needed. Something has changed and that is NOT his speed, its his endurance.
400m equation at the best circumstance is typically best 200m x 2 + 3 seconds. Therefore 20.2 x 2 + 3 = 43.4. At the moment his endurance appears to be 200m x 2 + 4.5seconds.
Btw: If you Jeremy Wariner and your endurance is not going too well the 800m seems like the perfect event to move up do... Sarcasm Alert

There was also a lot of talk about Edwin Moses giving it a go. And Sanchez tried it (400mH)
I'd like to see him in the 800. Just a slow 400 for him isn't exactly a sign that he's in condition to move up. In America there is so much focus on the 400 that I can almost see how people think that 800 runners are just slower versions. It is simply out of the range of many sprinters though.

Exactly my thinking, which is why I suggested that he move down to the 200, rather than up to the 800. I believe he could do low-mid 20.0x by next year, which is not at all bad, and which might put him in the mix nationally for a top-3 finish, of course depending on what everybody else runs. Spearmon is definitely ahead of him, along with a healthy Dix. Gatlin also might be reliably faster...but 20.53 early-season off 400 training is amazing. He reminds of a lot of a thinner Spearmon.
Also, Merritt should do the 200/400 double, as did MJ. If that guy practiced faster starts on the curve, he would easily be 19.9x IMHO.
