That guy is a complete dick. He regularly hawks stuff out of his house to pay for his plane tickets without his wife or kids knowing about it till he's gone. Congrats you won spartan race... your competition was retired military personnel and beer chugging sorority/fraternities who had nothing better to do on a weekend. Now go sell your kids bike to pay for that upgrade to first class.
Maybe if he had worn a shirt he wouldn't have shit out on the death race due to hypothermia.

He ain't no Geb. He's not gonna run under 2:11... and that's more than 7 minutes slower than Geb's PR.
Everyone's had teammates who thought they could do anything. Bet you guy never bashed them in person. Every competitive runner, at times, feels anything is possible- esp. when training is going well. I'm glad he voiced his opinion. That kind of thinking is part of the sport.

There is a big difference between a teammate saying they will PR or win their conference and someone saying they will break 2:00 in the marathon. If a runner on my team who is currently running just under 15 minutes for the 5k announced in the student newspaper that he is confident they can he can break 13 this year, I would tell him in person that it is not going to happen.

A pro level runner thinks he can do unprecedented things. But you don't have anything better to do, than encourage him to not even go there. When the U.S. loses to 2:03 marathoners, now or in the future- don't ever complain.
He's clearly just trying to get people to give him money so he doesn't have to work and can run all the time.
He is as a talented runner as you'll find. I have no doubt that given the opportunity he can do it.

Your stance is extremely misguided. A 2:16 downhill marathoner boasting that he could run sub 2 does nothing to make American runners any better. Guys like Bob Kennedy and Galen Rupp are the ones who have improved American running. Bob showed my generation what's possible and how to get there and a few talented guys have stepped up to the challenge. Galen is showing the next generation that even more is possible. More young people will step up to the challenge and follow suit.
Saying that you can compete with the Africans is worthless. Saying you can compete with the Africans AND following through with it is what is needed. Saying you can beat the Africans and better the world record by 4 minutes if only you didn't have to work is a desperate cry for an undeserved sponsorship.
2:15 at the Pikes Peak Ascent is pretty impressive as well. The guy is an outstanding athlete. The 2hr comments are bizarre. It's hard to know what to think about something like that. Maybe refusing to put any stock in what others consider realistic goals or limitations is what has led him to great relative success thus far, and he's not afraid to just put it out there. I hope for the sake of his wife and 5 young kids that he has a firm grasp of reality in most other areas of his life.
I think this guy has no knowledge of what the current world records are. No one in their right mind would say that they can run 4 minutes faster than all the East Africans who have dedicated their life to running marathons and ran 2:03 on flat courses
Bottom Line: We need more people like him, than people to say no to it.
he's just bs'ing about the sub 2 hr marathon. he's a very solid runner and probably could drop a few minutes with full time training. the hocking his family's possessions thing makes him entertaining and we don't get much of that in running. Since Jennings, how many other characters have there been among elite distance runners?

The guy is a fvckin crack pot. His pr came from a massive down hill race; Top of Utah. He would have a very hard time breaking 2:20 anywhere legit...
2:16 on a net downhill course equals very talented sub-elite, no where near pro-level.
