I was there and it looked to me like an official on the outside of the track was talking to Cheserek to get his foot/toe off the line when the starter fired the gun.

Looked to me like his plan was to get to the front quick (within 50m or so) but didn't have the smarts to change his strategy when he lost half second or so at the start. Being behind forced him to run way wide. Actually I don't think it cost him a whole lot.

According to Futsum's coach, Ches didn't realize that the 'horn' was the gun, and was awaiting a gun. Silly mistake, and even sillier to try and make up the ground he lost in 150 meters. But he is still a prep athlete (despite what the haters say) and does have time to learn. Futsum's 4:05 is impressive as well because he will not be a miler in college. Should be dangerous closing speed in the NCAA 5k/10k.
