Webb runs a huge time in HS (where they don't test), runs huge mid-season times (where they don't test), then bombs major international championships (where they test). His performances come in big breakthroughs, then he goes off the map for periods of time.

Rupp makes small, steady progressions year after year, getting a little better in many small ways, running his best at WC's, Olympics, and the Diamond League where they test the most. His coach has explicitly said they go right to the edge of what's allowed, but not over.

Why acknowledge that unless you're playing by the rules? Which of these profiles fits a doper and which doesn't?

Man...there is a lot of Magness hate on this thread. Seems like a nice guy to me. Heaven forbid a guy try to get started in coaching elites as early as possible.

Uh...Webb has run well at many races that test, and he doesn't really fit the profile of a doper (doesn't run well when it matters).

What's the relation between "nice guy" and "good coach"??? Is there a correlation? More often then not, great coaches are huge pricks!

As for Ciaran... I'd be wanting a change if I came all the way from Ireland to Portland thinking I was going to be coached by AlSal and ended up with... well... you know... Magness...

Can't ratify a record if there is no drug test. Unshakable consistency is actually one of the things doping can do for your training.

And since when has Rupp performed great in a world championship?

Well beaten in 28+ in '07.

13th in the '08 Olympics.

After a great '09 he was lackluster at the world champs.

In 2011, he gets railed in the last 600m and runs nearly 30 seconds faster 3 weeks later.

Of course he was young in '07; still ran pretty fast in '08; and '09 was a long season, but I still wouldn't consider any of those performances earth-shattering.

needless to say, coaches need to get better at keeping athletes healthy. probably it is a long term problem, things like diet may factor in greatly. tendons, bones, muscles tear need to be strong, you need to be eating well for most of your life.

suddenly going vegetarian or going on a some other kind of crack pot diet will not suddenly fix many years of dietary mistakes.

Elite athletes get injured because they run a ton. You don't get injured because you run 30 miles a week at nine-minute mile pace, not because of your caveman diet.

Centro is offically in the group, but still coached by Andy Powell his U of O coach

Jesus there are some dense people on this board. If you think O'Lionaird left because he was struggling for money, getting his ass handed to him in training, or offered PED's you're sorely mistaken. Everyone speculates and makes assumptions before knowing the truth.

Salazar is very busy and invested with Galen Rupp, at times other athletes don't feel they are getting his full and undivided attention. At this level that is often what you need to be confident in your training and perform well. Ciaran is an incredible runner who needed this attention.

Rowland also is a great fit for Ciaran as they both are European and the group down in Eugene provides him with Chelanga for distance stuff and Mulder for shorter stuff. That's a great training mix for a guy with range like Ciaran and affords him diversity in training. Rowland is a straight to the point and no "BS" guy, identical to Ciaran.

Don't count O'Lionaird out of anything. This is an immensely talented runner who has the confidence to compete and do so successfully on the World Level. I look forward to seeing his progresson down with OTC and Rowland. If you want to follow him I suggest GOCIARAN.COM.

But I get injured doing 20 miles a week. I must be doing something seriously wrong. : (
