Rice was so slow he averaged 20.4 yards a reception in 1988.
Did you watch Montana to Rice? Did you watch Young to Rice?
Montana threw a football accurately while on the run. Montana often threw five yard slant routes or five yard out routes to Rice. Rice was great gaining yards after catch. Young could run, ran faster than Montana but did not throw on the run as well as Montana. Montana rarely threw passes longer than ten yards to anyone. Young had a stronger arm than Montana. Rice ran routes some what deeper when Young was QB. Rice still ran mainly 5 yard to 15 yard routes for Young. The yards for Rice were mainly yards after the catch. Posters on letsrun are trying to give readers of letsrun the impression that Rice ran fly routes like Bob Hayes, Cliff Branch and Randy Moss on a regular basis. The greatness of Rice were the precise pass routes, Rice ran all routes well except for fly routes. Rice caught the ball. Rice played with no fear.
Unlike some of you, I first saw Rice catch passes from Willy Totten while they played for Mississippi Valley State in SWAC. If I believed Rice were a fast sprinter I would have said Rice was a fast sprinter. I have a high degree of respect for Jerry Rice but he was not a fast sprinter.
