5k Marathon! wrote:That's what I used to think as well. These are people that know what the distance of a marathon is.. professional, college educated. One of them ran the relay and talked all week about running the marathon. I think it is safe to assume that this person knows that the relay is four separate legs of the marathon. Yesterday's post was something about how excited and exhausted she was after "running the marathon". Soft Lie.
If it was a marathon relay that was conducted within the other marathon race, then she can certainly claim that she ran in the marathon. No lie there.
Why does this bother you so much? Do you feel diminished by their arguably incomplete assessments?
Splitting hairs but 'running the marathon' and 'running in the marathon' could have different meanings. If you accept that marathon is 26.2 miles, then she simply ran IN the marathon but did not run the marathon (again, 26.2 miles).
When I run a relay I always say I ran a relay. I have never run in a 200 mile race but have run in a couple of 200 mile relays. Big difference but most of the people are making these statements out of ignorance.
