Old Onitsuka Tiger racing flats

Mine were considerably lower tech than these 1981 vintage shoes...

Could one actually run on the 81's shown in that photo, or are those street shoes?

nope!

I remember the original canvas upper shoe also. It was white in color and there was next to nothing too it. Completely revlutionary for its day.

I followed up with a beautiful leather pair, same sole same weight called the Tiger Marup. Anyone remember those?

One of the classic racing flats of all time.

I'm afraid I never came across them, those were great times they ran then for HS runners. I was 2:59:30 for Seaside 1971

Ran Seaside in 1973 for 2:48 & change, in 1979 in that hurricane storm for 2:53 & change & once again in 1980 for 2:43:41

Scott went on to run on the UO team that won XC Nationals with Pre, and clocked 3:58 for the mile. Can you imagine a potential sub-4:00 miler nowadays running a (fast) marathon in HS?

That year we were down in 1971 we had a high school runner pull off a 2:39?, later on in his track season he ran 8:36 for the 3000 m

I do, but not from Seaside (I never made it there -- got hurt training for it).

Scott was a couple years older than me. He won the mile at the Wash. state meet that spring.

Russ was my age, so he would have been a HS sophomore that year. He and I had some good races in HS (although I beat him more often than not).

You must have run against Russ at the state level, since Russ was somewhat well known for dominating conference/district meets then...shall we say, underperforming... at the state meet. Still, with 9:05.0, he was 6th fastest in state history at the time. He was in our city, and the first really good runner I ever saw, and I was awestruck at the long-haired dude who would destroy very good runners locally in cross.

Yes, I was in a different conference/district so ran against him only at the bigger invitationals and state meets. He did seem to have a tendency to flop at the big ones (although not as badly as Jim Campbell).

I was surprised that Russ threw in the towel early at the UW.

This a wonderful resurrection of a thread about a great shoe. Since the original thread, I have obtained: 1)a pair of NIB size 13 white/red/blue leather original Onitsuka Tiger Road Racer; 2) a pair of new size 12 blue suede Onistuka Tiger Road Racer; & 3) a pair of size 11.5 NIB grey/red Super Marup.

I would be willing to part with any of these for the right price. They are all in excellent shape.

You're probably thinking of the Obori,

blue with yellow strips.

Worn by Bill Rodgers in his heyday.

Kiwi fastman Rex Wilson & many others wore them too.

Yeah Onitsuka Tigers are sweet shoes I first heard of them for Freerunning and parkour which is what I use them for. I noticed that they look really similar to my Hyper XC cross country spike and now also use them for road races. I am 17 and some of my friends also knew they were racing flats back in the day.
