I think I found a way to fix this problem. Its an app I would call My Good Clone, that clones a few basic pictures of yourself into a fake facebook profile, pics which you can choose, and then just peppers it with random status updates.
And just for kicks, you Like certain harmless companies/pages.

I read this today and wasn't shocked, but was curious why an employer was on a social networking site on a company computer-the jobs that I've had since 2000 did not allow personal access to network sites. Also, read it closely-you'll have to give up your LRC password as well!! That's egregious

Most of what Anonymous does is just social engineering. If someone has an obvious password or uses a password hint that you can figure out (like first school or maiden name) it isn't at all hard to access their accounts.

What does "regards it as a federal crime" mean exactly? Which law are you breaking by violating facebook's terms of service? Seems kind of bs that the DoJ would claim an act constitutes a federal crime, not cite any specific law to back their opinion, then state they wouldn't be prosecuting any violations anyway.
A law that is not enforced is not really a law, but just more of a suggestion.

I would agree with what you wrote 100%. Any time you provide information to a company - free or not, online or offline - you are taking a risk.
What I was trying to explain is that Facebook has public and private options. The public ones are public and the private are private, much like any online platform (email, photo, online banking). Whether criminals/malevolents can access that information is another story altogether. Are all of the security measures equal? Hell no, but that is not what we are discussing. We are discussing whether it is okay if an employer requires you to hand over a password during an interview.
I am open to hearing what PeriWink has to say about the issue, but I felt like it needed to be related to the topic at hand since he came in gun blazing, blasting about a semi-related topic.
I think this issue is very interesting, mainly because it is apparent that so many people don't really "get" it. Much like SOPA.

Yes, screening is fine. Asking you to logon, though, why? Why do they need access to settings and private information? That is what is so confusing to me.
I am 100% fine with them screening a candidates facebook page. I actually do that now. I think that it is 100% acceptable and I encourage other employers to do it. Helps quite a bit. I often discover which candidates are discussing articles from the Economist versus posting "hot pix" of Ryan Gossling.
I am not in HR, but I perform interviews quite a bit. Typically, I sit down with 2 or 3 candidates each month. I usually get their resume emailed to me from HR, I read it, do a brief Facebook, Twitter, Google and LinkedIn search to see if it fits their resume. Often I will use what I find to ask questions in the interview.
I make no secret of researching them. Normally, they expect it.

No it is not! I use Facebook to send messages to friends and family and they send me messages. I post "notes" that are by invite only. My FB is set to private. It is clear that people do not understand Facebook. I wouldn't get too worked up about it.
I bet everyone on this thread is in agreement, it is just that people are referencing different things, thinking they are discussing the same thing.
If you post information to a public Wall, people are allowed to see it (including potential employers). If you keep private, unshared, password-protected information stored on Facebook (email messages, documents, private groups), they have no right to see it. I think that is hard to argue against.
