Galen Rupp 6 titles=no heart. Derrick zero titles=all guts

well its all in the state of mind. Derrick has to step up his game, Rupp has talent but he could be better if he was more on the pyhological side with some effort. but in the end it all goes down with who has the will to win and Derrick does not have that.

Do you still harbor some bitterness toward Harold Norpoth for sitting and kicking against Pre? Which famously resulted in Pre calling him "chicken-sh!t". It's okay, you can let it go. I guess this is where I disagree with you. I would sit and kick every time if I had the ability. There is no need to lead a race if you stick with the leaders and kick around everyone. Obviously, there will be times when kicking won't work, but why would you hold someone's kicking speed against them??!! That's like getting mad at Michael Jordan for hitting a last second shot and saying "he should have made that shot in the first quarter!" Sport is sport, the point is winning. If he wins, it shouldn't matter how (clean obviously). But I guess if Pre's definition of the word guts were in the dictionary, then yes the sit and kick would be no guts.

As much as I would love to see this, I doubt it'll be this year's olympic team that CD will make.

In the 5k, CD would have to go up against guys like Lagat, Rupp, Solinsky, possibly Ritz, Teg, Bumbalough, Moran, and a few other competitors which all the names listed (except Ritz who didn't compete) CD lost to last year at USA Outdoor Champs. In the 10k, CD possibly would go up against Rupp, Teg, Curtis, Nelson, Ritz, Bauhs, and a few other names. It all depends on who does what, how healthy will CD be, how healthy everyone else is, possibility of people dropping out during the race, who is coming in the trials on a hot streak, and many more questions.

Prediction: If CD sticks with the 5k, I can see him finishing 5th (losing to Lagat, Rupp, Ritz, and Solinsky). In 2016,I predict, will be the year he makes the olympic team. Will he make a world team before 2016? I believe he can make a world team before 2016.

An excellent point that people choose to ignore. Chelenga all but said, "The only way anyone will beat me in this race will be to kick past me at the end," and Rupp did. The way Chelenga took it out there was no way Rupp could lead or try to break him--it was a race between two gifted, talented, well trained runners using the tactics they thought were best for them. And Rupp won. That people--so-called fans of our sport--find fault with him for it just saddens me.

I agree with your overall point. Race to win. That is all there is to it.

However, your statement, "The way Chelenga took it out there was no way Rupp could lead or try to break him" is completely absurd. Did you watch the race? After Rupp caught him, Chelanga essentially demanded that Rupp take the lead. Rupp declined. Chelanga came to a near standstill inviting Rupp to lead. Rupp stayed one step behind.

Chelanga was so incensed by Rupp refusing to do any of the work leading that he took off in a mindless sprint midway through the race to try to get Rupp off his back (or at least to tell him, "f u").

To say that Rupp, "could (not) lead or try to break him" is patently false.

Wow, a stalker! I don't where you got the bitterness thing from, and I'm not familiar with Prefointen's attitude about it. Pre could as well be criticizing himself. Why did he sit for more than 3,000m of the Olympic final, where he didn't have the kick to finish in the medals? He had no place to criticize Norpoth for sitting on him, as he could have simply run faster.

Norpoth was of course a very good champion runner, however worked all the time on his speed and was lacking endurance. So he used the only tactic available to him. What I don't admire is that he did not prepare well in that sense, and was not prepared to run a hard race.

The same is the case with Lagat but to a lesser extent. I'm sure Lagat is stronger over distance, but still very weak compared to his DEPENDENCY on his speed. For example Lagat who ran 3:26 will never run 26:30 for 10k or 2:05 in a marathon, in fact he is not within 15 seconds of the record for 5k.

Rupp can run maybe 3:39, and has run 26:48 for the 10k! Who do you think I admire the most?????? Rupp of course.

I don't hold Lagat's kicking speed against him. It is his weakness at doing anything else. We saw how Bekele destroyed him when he ran the last 5 laps in 4:56 (or so) in humid conditions and already a pretty good pace before that. The mistake Bekele made a few times was to keep waiting and testing his last 400m against people much faster for 1 lap - major mistake. I think it was only because he wanted to test himself and his ego, to see if he could win that way, as to run away from El G and Lagat earlier would have been very EASY for him.

The only answer is that he must have wanted the challenge more than the wins,

Hey, Liar Liar dude. I see that your stupidity is matched by your cowardice. Come on back here little boy and just flat out admit how unbelievably moronic your post was. Truth is, you'd gain a little bit of respect that way.

I remember that Ron Clarke suggested to Dave Bedford that he wait until half way through the '72 Olympic 10K to take the lead and blast away. Now that would have been interesting. Bedford ran a 59 first lap and faded later in the race.

Guts runners can run smart too, and win. Nothing wrong with being a kicker, but I love a runner with a full tool box who can think on the run. El G with his 53 third lap in his Olympic gold run comes to mind. Rupp has a lot of gifts, tools and guts -- and pretty decent race sense. Let's see how it comes together this year for him.

without reading the thread, here's what I think.

At the end of a race, derrick's face is all twisted up and agonized. He looks like he is putting in 110%.

Whereas, Rupp looks pretty much the same, first meter or 10,000th meter.

So, shallow track fans, you think Derrick has more heart. But you would be wrong.

Rupp's college career was stupendous, much better than CD. Rupp won just about everything and helped his team again and again.
