When's the last time Kara Goucher beat Desi head to head? When's the last time Kara held a lead late in a marathon?
All three women give us a great shot in London. Desi clearly isn't the most talented woman on the squad but she's obviously comfortable going head to head and competing with anyone. I respect that.

I think Josh should have run in the womens trials to see if he could get top 3.

Are you saying Shalane ran a 1:10 as a marathon paced run which means she is in 2:20 shape and just jogged the trials? If that is the case, we are in great shape for a medal. I have another saying that you can NEVER tell how much effort the winner put into the race and Shalane did easily pull away from Desi at the end.
We probably don't know how hard Desi ran either since all she had to do was qualify. If she didn't really go all out that would explain how an out of shape, crying in workouts, self doubting, poor running form Goucher was able to be so close to the others.

When he starts getting guys under 2h05 and women under 2h20 then he has has done something for the marathon (like 2 guys under 13.00 and one under 27.00). Americans have to stop revelling in mediocrity if people are to be impressed. Certainly Canova isn't impressed, nor should he be impressed at this point. This isn't the 1970's where 2h09-10 was great, and the best women were running low 2h20's over 25 years ago. Please catch up if you want any "props" from serious fans of the sport.
Name a guy Jerry has coached to a top level marathon? - no one really cares about the women unless they are hot anyway. If Bairu runs under 2h10 tomorrow, then that is the beginning of Jerry's hype as a marathon coach.

I agree that Kara has heart. But she wanted to be at the London Olympics BAAD. I only hope she puts as much heart into the actual Olympic Marathon as she did this race.
Sometimes it seems when our athletes get in the race and are not challenging for a medal they give up and settle. Settle for a subpar performance. I hope all of our athletes step up and race and not make the trails there big race of the year. Sorry but I have seen this play out before.

Krying Kara is a world class athlete. She obviously has the mental attitude to pull it together during a race. Good or bad result the tears start flowing afterwards. Stop it already.....you made the team and should be ecstatic and think, "maybe my year wasn't that bad..." Have some confidence and show it after. Maybe Adam's headcase ways are wearing off on her.

That is a tough one to explain. 3:25 is too far behind to see Kara's butt. But 8:10 is too far ahead. Mmmmh.
I just hope their kids get her mental toughness and not Adam's. We all know "injury prone" is a euphemism for lacks sack.

My bad...Still, Desi is 2/3 against Kara in head to head marathon's and holds a better PR than Kara.
Im starting to think the average LRC poster prefers Kara over Desi in terms of running. I find this strange, since most LRC posters are obsessed with "Blue-Collar" runners, and like to see runners come from no where in terms of college/HS careers. Desi fits this bill perfectly. She was her college's #3 runner, debuted in her first marathon at 2:44, and has worked for all the success she has found.
Contrast that with Kara Goucher who was a 3-time NCAA Champ, a HS phenom, and a World's Bronze Medalist, and the only conclusion I can come to is that LRC posters only care about "hots" in terms of female runners.

I'm not surprised Kara ran that well, remember she was about as good as Desi before her baby? Nothing to see here, she's just back in shape now, and maybe missed 9 seconds of training to Desi.
I think that Kara v. Desi is the best rivalry right now. Shalane would be a good foil for Desi (due to her glamorous pedigree and accomplishments) but she seems still to be a notch above. Kara is the homecoming queen v. Desi the scruffy tomboy and they are on a collision course for London. Awesome stuff.
Amazingly enough my GF watched the race with me and enjoyed it. Among other things she mentioned that Kara looked really uncomfortable and that Shalane and Desi looked good.
Kara picks her feet up a little better than she used to. Remember that Nike video where she says her team mates call her the "lawn mower" because she used to skim her feet across the ground. Oh, that was so cute.
