Dick Beardsley hosts a race in his home town of Detroit Lakes, and he is usually able to get a special guest to make an appearence and run in the half marathon with him. Last year it was Alberto Salazar, and Beardsley beat him by more than 8 minutes (1:19 to 1:27). The year before it was Bill Rogers and Beardsley beat him by 6 minutes (1:20 to 1:26), though that was the year it was 85 degrees and humid, and one runner collapsed and died at mile 12. This coming year his guest is Joan Benoit Samuelson.
Beardsley has run 3 marathons already this year:
Hops Marathon By The Bay 2:47:44
Napa Valley Marathon 2:43:58
Brookings Marathon 2:48:53
(plus 6 others last year)
Alberto Salazar has run 1 marathon this year:
(assuming it is not another guy with the same name)
Houston Marathon 4:13:16
(none last year)
There are several Bill Rogers listed in the results.
I am not sure if any of them are THE Bill Rogers.
Frank Shorter has no results
Rodgers IS running today.
AFTER a double leg fracture, and in his 50's, he is breaking 62:00 for 10 miles.
Clearly he shopped at a 'gene' store where the rest of us cannot.
The only reason Rodgers continues to run races is to make appearance money. Otherwise why would someone with his talent and times of the past continue to race and torture himself. Beleave me its not for just the love of it. Anyway as noted in the earlier post we are asking what would have he run today if he had the support and not have raced so much back in the 1970s and 1980s. My guess he might have run 2:07 something for the marathon.
My apologies for posting.
I'll leave so as not to offend you.
Have a nice life, by the way.
Have you ever met Bill, by the way?
Not to be a smart a**, but you might get better results for Bill Rodgers if you add the "d" to his name.
Firefly said "were competing today and in their prime." Yes, Rodgers and the like continue to compete, but the point is what they would be doing in races if they were in their prime today. I've got Salazar under 2:06 and Shorter, Beardsley and Rodgers in the 2:06 range.
The only reason that other masters runners beat these guys is because Sal, Beardsley, and Billy used it up when it counted.
I always laugh in races at guys who are 35 and just getting serious about running who beat me and are really stoked over a 16 minute 5K. Yeah they might've beaten me, but I had those 200 or so races that were a hell of a lot faster 12-15 years ago. I'm just not fired up to compete anymore.
