It is possible because high school running isn't near what it used to be. If you were a high school runner 20 to 30 years ago and broke 10 for the two mile (or 3200, whatever) - you were a decent runner. Now, at most high schools or meets you'd be one of the best. There are still good runners running fast, just not the depth.

McM calculator puts a 8:50 as worth about a 9:29 2 miles which is definitely "near" a 9:20. Also, what does that have to do with anything?
My high school's records are 4:10 and 9:06.
Later went on to run 13:4x in college. Set in the 1970's.
The rumor is his parents dropped him off at school in the morning, and he ran home 9.9 miles every night after practice.
My HS team's 3200 record has been there since 1980. I nearly broke it my senior year, but missed it by that much. It still stands. It was 9:59. I agree with Flagpole on this one.
Funny thing is, I had the 1600 record at 4:47, and hoped to God it would be broken, since it was not a very good time. One of my teammates broke it the next year, thankfully.

Nope. I'm in the southeast.
1. New schools are built diluting the student population. simply put, other schools records are probably similar or faster.
2. Running is not as big of a deal any more. In general students are over-weight, unmotivated and running is hard. And who wants to sweat when you can go home, play video games and feel like you have friends by posting on facebook.
3. 9:20 is a solid time. It may not get you tot he state meet any more but it is still hard to do.
4. Sports have changed. The focus is now on specialization and club sports. That soccer player is now playing all year, and paying money to do so. They are told not to do any other sport or they will get behind and lose out on that scholarship, or Olympic team or whatever the coach is promising them. (I have heard that directly from the coach by the way).
5. Populations are growing. We no longer have a sense of community, even amongst many of our smaller towns now days. Basically, less people care.
6. Motivated, disciplined students with a strong support system are going to private schools. Public schools have a bad image, mostly unjustified, but still. Those who can afford it want their kid in the best school. If that's not the local private school they move or go private.
7. Coaching. Is there such thing as a long term coach any more? Teachers are over worked for the pay and less and less are coaching. Coaches get paid even less. You really need to love it. If you look at all the good programs there is on constant, coaching.
8. Many more reasons... just think about it.

It still stands becasue it is a pretty good time and would be the record at half of American high schools. In fact, to this day, 9:20 would win the state meet in several states.
Ran 4:17 IM and 9:16 2M. No one ran faster than 4:19 for 1600 or 1M until 2010 when kid ran a 4:14 and I finally lost that one. But no one at my school (1200 students) has run faster than 9:29 3200 or 2M since I left.
Like others have said, unless you came from a great school with deep program, anything under 4:20 or 9:20 has a pretty good chance of standing awhile.
Most high school records that fast stand for a long, long time. I ran 4:21.4 for the mile and a 9:20.4 2-mile at my high school in 1975 and no one has broken 4:30 or 9:45 forthe mile/2-mile, or since it went metric, for 1600m and 3200m since then.
