Funny things parents yell to their kids in a meet

Interesting. Yesterday at my daughters' race, I yelled at them (towards the finish ) "GO Daughter 1, push it! You're almost there!"

Hmmm....is that bad?

I was thinking the same thing. Parents get caught up in the excitement of things and yell something just so their child can hear their encouragement. I have been a competitive runner, coach, and now a parent of young runners, and I don't think it matters a whole lot what they yell. Although some of these examples are pretty hilarious.

Heard a dad tell his son with about a half mile to the end of a district run in CC, "What are you doing up here?" The kid was maybe the 2nd or 3rd best runner on his team, yet on that day he, for some reason, was running way above his ability. I talked to the kid after the meet and he said that hearing his dad question how come he was doing so well was the best motivation he had ever had.

I was in a race one time with a kid and his coach/dad yelled at him to "RIP HIS HEART OUT!!!"

"They just started the girls race and from the looks of it, first place is haulin' *ss. Don't let her catch you, then you'd look like a b*tch!"

Thanks Dad...

(This was in a meet in which the schedule had to be shortened to avoid weather and they were starting races while others were still on the course)

Dad only saw me run a few times when I did a track or tempo session on the track.

After one very nice tempo session I told my dad how relaxed I was and how I gradually increased the pace.Told him about my splits. He knew 0% about running. He stops reading his newspaper and asks me if my races start out easy/relaxed (as my tempo had) and to that I say no. "Well then run harder from the start next time."

And another nugget of wisdom. After my very first 3 mile run (freshman year) in practice. I rush home stoked that I ran 3 whole miles. "You should run 6 miles next time then 3 miles will be a piece of cake"

I think it's funny when high school parents yell "YOU GOT THIS!" Their girl is in like 50th place in the open and she's really tired. What does she really have?

And one that personally happens to me a lot is when my parents yell at me to "MOVE UP!" as I come through the half mile. They always seem surprised when I start off in the back of the race and then catch a ton of people. I do it every race, yet they are always really worried when they see me far back to start.

Unless you have a split or place to relay the appropriate cheer is always "Go [name]!"

My old teammates and I use to spend our easy runs thinking of the most awkward things to say. My favorite was "Have courage!"

"SWEEP THE LEG!!!"

At a 8-10 year old XC meet: "Are you going to finish dead last, AGAIN?!?"

I felt really bad for the kid, who clearly did not want to be there...

my favorite is what my dad yelled to me when a teammate and I were dueling it out for the win in a small dual meet. it's dead quiet and he yells, "DONT LET EACH OTHER BEAT EACH OTHER"

I was standing at the starting line waiting for the 3200 meters to start at a fairly big invitational. My parents were standing behind the fence about 30 feet from where I was standing and my Mom yells "Who's your main competition?" Talk about an embarassing moment!

Some of these are freakin hilarious.

Look, they mean well, okay? Just translate whatever they actually say to "we're with you, kid" and it should work out.

Was once watching an indoor race at the NY Armory. One dad kept yelling to his daughter "USE YOUR KICK!" "USE YOUR KICK!" the ENTIRE race.

It was a 5k.

Saw this recently...a mother said this to her son:

"Pull up your skirt Nancy!"

I thought that was the gibberish word Darren McGavin spouted in Christmas Story (whilst his index finger was extended) near the basement door when he was hacked off.
