I suspect Lutz might try to track the Wisconsin guys from a slight distance as his guide; he ha is faster then they are in the first half he might die, but he has been running from behind, I think, which bodes well for the move up to 10k. Twice his placing at Wisconsin is not unreasonable - low 30s. LV will likely not get there, even with several more weeks. It will take until track season and shorter races for LV to pass Lutz.
Verzbicas is coming off a summer of concentrating on the tri and so his running base has faltered. He's not done badly for a freshman, but he can and will run a lot faster even this month. Wait until outdoor track to see the real thing. Anyone who runs 3:59/8:29 in high school (he's the only one in America) will figure it out in the NCAA's as soon as he has a good base. Lutz has impressed, as has Elkaim. It would be cool to be able to spot in advance which of the best high school runners will star right off the bat in college. Wasn't Webb Big Ten champ in XC and maybe 11th at NCAA's, while BK won and Ritz was fourth? It seemed as if Verzbicas was as good at xc as any of those guys, in high school.
Lutz has done well with racing strategy. At Big 12's, when the pack went out in 4:36, he was 5-10 seconds off the back. He moved up by 6k and ran with the top pack until they broke up...very smart runner

He didn't hold back. He literally could not stay up with the pack. He was lucky the BIG 12 is slow enough to where a few runners let him pass.
How was he not fast enough? He was actually moving faster than anyone else in the middle of the race? He just knows not to touch that early pace because he doesn't have too.
