It takes time for your core temperature to rise. You're probably not running long enough during a 5k.
I wonder whether US races will end up requiring a medical certificate like they do in France. It would prevent every incident, but it would help weed out some people who shouldn't be taking an unecessary risk. It also might help some runners get a heart disease diagnosis they would never have sought out. Runners tend to think that they are not at risk for heart issues because they are physically fit. Doctors tend to do the same. Then, you hear about a very fit runner dropping dead with an undiscovered blockage.

That might be good but it seems that most of these heart conditions would not be found in routine screenings. This guy was a firefighter so you know he had to be screened to get hired and probably has annual physicals also. I've seen people in the military drop dead from this type of condition and they have pretty extensive physical work done prior to entry.
What type of screening would be required to find these conditions that can kill you? EKGs, Stress test?? I would love to go to a Dr for a screening and be 100% satisfied that I'm not going to drop dead in my next marathon.

Why? What if the doctor told you it would be foolish to ever run again? Stuff like that I don't want to know. The guy didn't die with any pain and he was doing something he enjoyed, that's how I want to go.
I'm curious, like another alluded to, if caffeine could have been a factor. Seems like in many of the deaths without a prior defect that caffeine was a major contributor.
