I've been observing and participating in distance running for most of my life, and I've had a chance to get to know some of the Kenyans...wonderful people for the most part.
Kenyan runners LIVE TO RUN. They have few distractions. They don't make excuses for poor training, they just train harder. They believe that the only way to win is to train hard with very few rest periods in the schedule, and their results, as a nation, reflect that.
I'd say that the best thing that my parents ever did for me was to refuse to get cable TV when it became available in Reno in the mid-70's, and also refuse to get me video games. Instead they filled my closet with bicycles, baseball mitts, footballs, and any sort of outdoor sporting equipment that I wanted. When my brother and I would fight in the house, mom would just say "just fight outside OK? You get the idea.
