the account is that the national 400 champ paced him thru to 500m & then dropped out, leaving hicham to run last 300 alone

a reasonable line of fit for morceli in '95 is :

47.60 / 1'43.20 -> 2'12.3 , 3'27.1 , 4'44.5 , 7'24.3 , 12'57.2 , 27'34.4

he possibly was fractionally quicker over 400 than hicham, but unlikely better than mid-47, wouda given the 1k record a fright & sub-7'25/13'00 ( but was better for these 2 distances in '94 when he appeared to concentrate on longer distances )

his '94 season is interesting - he ran 7'25.1 with a 2k outside 5'00 ! & he ran 13'03 with a 51.9 last lap !

i think either he was injured leading upto '94 & lost speed &/or just concentrated on longer distances

i reckon a good line of fit for him in '94 was :

48.70 / 1'44.60 -> 2'13.7 , 3'28.4 , 3'45.1 , 4'45.3 , 7'23.8 , 12'52.8 , 27'15.5

the only one that is questionable is his 1500 - predicted 3'28.4, but he only went 3'30.6 - it's possible he didn't really push his 1500 races that year as he possibly felt he wasn't in wr shape for it, so no point wasting energy trying to chase it, but it does seem that his increased endurance couda offset his speed loss to have bettered his "weak" 3'28.8wr ( weak compared to his 3'44.3wr of '93 ), but he had no chance of breaking his mile wr

he had to have near 3'27-flat potential ( just from a 1'41 having to be in the region of a 3'26/3'27 from equivalence point of view - i haven't checked iaaf points )

an appraisal of that "1'42.7"

most circuit races have wabbit from 150m - 400m & then shoud drop out

that is 250m or ~ 0.625s drafting advantage

therefore, any guy who goes 1'42.0 -> 1'42.6/1'42.7 solo

1'43.0 -> 1'43.6/1'43.7 solo

now, hicham almost certainly had the wabbit pacing him from 0m - 500m ( it's hard to believe he waited 'til 150m to cut in & draft him ) & assume perfect drafting - anything else is waste of time

that is 250m more than standard or 0.625s further advantage than standard circuit wabbit-chase

therefore, in standard circuit race with wabbit from 150 - 400m, hicham couda been expected to run :

1'42.7 + 0.625 + 0.1 to 0.2s for auto time =

1'43.40 / 1'43.50

that is actually close to 0.5s slower than expected, so in effect that 1'42.7 wasn't that good an effort, but is perfectly believable

Ventolin what do you think Said Aouita could have run for 400 and 800 at his best? I believe he ran 46.9 for 400m (and a supposed hand timed 46.1). I remember reading that he also managed to run the last 300 of a 1500m in 36.0 secs one time.

? Juantorena ran 44.26 and 1:43.5 during the same 1976 Olympic Games, winning gold at both, during his first season of running the 800 seriously. 400/800 runners of his caliber are much, much, much rarer than 800/1500 runners of the same caliber.

I have the greatest respect for Alberto J and his achievements. Maybe the top-tier 4/8 type is rarer than the 8/15 type (Cram/Ovett). But 4/8/15 would be in a different league.

Coe was closer to a top-tier 4/8/15 runner than anyone else. Coe's visible prowess at 400 was arguably better than El G, Morceli, Ovett and certainly better than Cram. There's no doubt if he wasn't stumbling in that relay he'd have been closer to 45.0 for the leg. The other 8/15 types were not at that level.

Not even the great PGS, although he did run a 400 leg for NZL relay at the 1960 OG.

aouita had the biggest mouth of any guy & lot of his exploits are inflated ( probably by him ! )

'85 was his best year by far ( albeit he was quicker over 800 in '88 when he concentrated on it )

for '85, a good line of fit is :

48.40 / 1'44.20 -> 3'28.0 , 4'45.0 , 7'23.7 , 12'53.6 , 27'19.6

i doubt he was better than low-48 & low-1'44 then

the 1500, 2k & 3k look quick, but remember, he never chased a record properly ( too lazy ), mostly letting pace drift & trying to rescue it with a 53/54 last lap ( remember 52.7 in his 3'29.7 ) - if he'd put in the hard effort in those races from the gun he'd have gone close to 3'28-flat & interestingly, well below 7'25

the 12'53 looks spot on as he did run 13'00.4, pretty much ambling around for 11.5 laps & putting something like a 54 last lap - he couda gone much faster if he'd hammered it from the gun

the 10k is only relevant if his endurance extended "perfectly" to 10k off his 1500/5k training in '85

which indicates 45 flat 400 speed with specific training, good competition.

consider this rule of thumb.

if you have a world record, you can run pretty well (near world class) at half the distance.

I hope Coe isn't handling the London 2012 budget: references the 5000 as being "five times" his primary race distance of 800m.(BTW he looked suitably nauseated after 12.5 laps)

In a 400m relay, a stumble like that can cost you an entire second. The momentum from the running start is why 400m relay splits from the 2nd, 3rd and anchor legs have a big advantage. The 1st leg is usually pretty fast as well, but that becasue it is usually the 2nd fastest guy.

Agree with Trackcoach. I'd say that run was worth under 46.0 from blocks that day without stumble/easing down.
