If my coach was paying all of his attention and doing almost all of his coaching on one of my teammates, whom I beat off of inconsistent training spurred from a long injury, I'd be like, "um.. Don't you realize what you have when you're coaching me?"

Of course he is. You might be able to debate how good he is at it but he is definitely a marathon coach.

He is a marathon coach that has had the opportunity and the cash to work with some of the finest athletes in the US and he has consistently failed. He has NEVER coached a single marathoner to ever run faster than they ran in their debut under him.

This includes Browne, and Goucher.

I agree with going to train with Li and Lagat. Lagat never has bad races. You train to run fast, not run endless mileage.

I fear that Alan made a terrible mistake going to Oregon, and it put an end to his career. He is 28 now. El Guerrouj ran a PB only in the 5000 after that age, and the same for Lagat, though Lagat also has PBs in the 2 mile and 3000 after that age I think.

Alan should have made use of the Nike facilities to get healthy, but never left the coach that got him to 3:46.

alan needs to come train in austin. He'll have david torrence and jacob hernandez to train with, not to mention endless running trails and great weather.

the problem i see with him under salazar is webb was never a high mileage runner. he said himself repeatedly in interviews that his high school success was due to his doing many other things, like lifting wieghts and swimming. yes, he lost wieght, but he also lost a lot of muslcle and may not be use to running the mile in his current form.

He should go train with Andrew Wheating and Vin. At least Vin has a long track record with milers. Marcus O'Sullivan in Villanova is somewhat close to his old stomping grounds in Virginia. Jim Spivey is a lower miles/speed emphasis guy that might be more compatible with Webb.

Salazar's training was like an extrapolation of his marathon training, with early season underdistance races like Webb's season debut 800 which he bombed. It was like "my marathoners and 10K guys run miles, 3K and 5K during the preseason, let's put Alan in 800 even though he did no speedwork".

Whereas traditionally, milers would start out with an overdistance race during the "preseason" (Ovett ran half marathons, Walker would jump in part of a marathon, many American milers would jump in the Carlsbad 5000).

Just seems like Salazar was trying to develop his own "signature" training system (at the expense of his athlete's success).

f*** all the haters! Webb is the man AND THE AMERICAN RECORD HOLDER IN THE MILE...if things aren't working out with AlSal, he can choose whichever coach feels best for him. As long as he stays true to himself, he will choose the right coach. No corporate bullshit telling him whats best for Webb. Do your thing Alan!

John Cook should probably be on the list of potential replacements...has proven himself to be a great mid d coach (manzano, rowbury, hernandez, flanagan, donahue)...seems pretty moderate in the mileage department as well

Alan Webb should go train with Ryan Hall. Ryan Hall does not have a coach either.

Who says that any of the coaches mentioned would want to coach Mr Webb at this point.
