there was no way there were 16 faster intrinsic 1500 guys than willis that year - nearer maybe a handful
I think Willis executed a perfect race strategy and had tons of luck when he got the bronze (now silver). Don't forget the dozen of Africans who couldn't run the Olympics because only 3 spots were open per country (potentially on the World Performance List). Added to the fact that some of the Africans are WAY past their peak or burned-out from training camps to perform well at the Olympics. Plus, people like Lagat were injured. Now many athletes could be better than Willis, but he showed up when it mattered.
That's why when people talk about Solinsky getting on the podium I don't take it as crazy talk. Just some dumb luck, a good race strategy, and staying healthy.
