Ever fall off a treadmill? (Good story)

No falling off this evening but a girl gets on the mill a couple over and I could easily tell the pace was way too fast. After about 1 minute her shoe comes untied so she stops to tie it. Gets back on, sets it at breakneck speed for her and lasts about 2 minutes at the most. Cleans the machine and goes and uses some of the other machines. What good is a 3 minute aerobic workout?? Three different people started and stopped their workout (one twice) on that one machine as I was doing my hour.

So about a year ago I was in New Orleans for my friend's bachelor party. I didn't feel like running outside and having to stop at every light, so I decided to go for 45 minutes or so on the treadmill at the hotel. About 20 minutes in, still slightly hazy from the night before, I accidentally hit my headphone cord with my arm. This sent my iPhone flying off the treadmill. Like a complete asshole, I turned around to look for it. Of course, in doing this, I placed one foot right on the edge of the treadmill, which immediately slammed me down on my side and shot me off the back of the machine at 9-10 mph. I just lay on the ground for a minute or so in agony.

My pride was hurt more than my body. Fortunately no one was around.

I read it as saying 12 mph (5 minute miles) is his race pace over the 1.5 M distance. Your interpretation does not make sense grammatically.

The treadmills I run on have a clip you attach to your shirt, so if you fall do off, they shut down immediately. Never happened so far. Annoyingly, they also have a touch screen display, that's sometimes really slow to react. I've had some scary moments running 800m repeats, and not being able to reduce the speed at the end of the interval, struggling to keep the pace with one arm stretched out to hit the screen...

I tried to get my airplane to take off from a treadmill once.

He didn't say '5 minutes is the time it takes me to run 1.5 miles' he said '12 mph (ie 5 minute miling) is the speed at which I can run the distance of 1.5 miles'

I have never fall off personally but I have watched my brother attempt to jump onto a running treadmill and fail. He face planted onto the treadmill and got very messed up.

Suggest this as a challenge to a friend if you really don't like him that much and would like to see him get banged up.

A real cute girl fell off one a while back. It was during lunch and there weren't a lot of people there. I was a few down and I could tell it embarrassed her to death. She did what that guy did and tried to jump back on. Bad decision. I didn't go over to assist her as I thought that would make it worse.

She got back on and glanced over at me. I thought of acting like I didn't see her, but that was unreasonable.

I just told her that anyone who has spent any time on a treadmill has had that happen to them.

She said really? To you too? I lied and said yep, twice.

It started a nice conversation. She is now my gf. I still haven't told her the truth.

i didnt think i had a story. but i remembered a good one about two of my dads coworkers. we'll call them bob and dave

bob and dave are in India for work. they are on the treadmills in their hotel. its 30+ stories in the sky and the treadmills face an all glass wall (decent view i imagine). messing around, dave starts to increase the speed until hes practically sprinting. with no warning, the treadmill stops. it doesnt slow to a stop, it completely stops. dave flies THROUGH the front display thing and slams into the glass wall. must have been pretty scary

2nd day at my new job I was using the treadmill in the gym at the office. It was hotter then hell so I jumped off for a second to plug in the big fan. When I went to get back on I forgot I left the treadmill running at the same speed I had been going at. I just stepped right back on the belt and was flung up into the air, landed on my back on the belt and then was shot off the treadmill into the wall.

Still got up and finished my run, what else could I have done. Even increased the pace to try and look tough, but there is no coming back from that. 2 years later, I think the staff still remember me as the guy that fell off the treadmill

When he was in his prime, Steve Scott was in one of those elite-runner test groups, and he had to do a VO2-max test on a treadmill. He was wearing the helmet with the breathing tubes and had a bunch of electrodes taped to his chest with wires going to equipment next to the treadmill. The tester kept raising the speed and then the incline about once every two minutes. Steve took it seriously and tried to stay on as long as he could, and when it was something ridiculous like 4:30 pace at a 10% grade, he was trying to make it to a round-number minute and basically passed out. He was thrown off the back while all the equipment was ripped off him, including a bunch of patches of tape from his chest. He was okay, luckily, but I think everyone was too impressed to laugh.

hate to admit but as an undergrad, I was in a running study to exhaustion, to compare glucose vs. fructose drinks at U of Iowa. Was expected to be about 20 miles each time, and drink throughout. Wanting to be cool and to celebrate making a bit of money, I bought a pair of new shorts and wore them for one of the runs (in school colors, of course). Running 7 minute miles, and turning sideways to talk with one of the researchers, who told me to just keep looking forward, but "naw, I can do this", and seconds later caught the edge of the TM and down I went, ruining the shorts and my ego. The lead researcher, Carl Gisolfi, felt badly enough for me that he bought me a new pair of shorts! Nice guy, but I am still embarrassed to this day. Wasn't the last time my ego got in my way, but I am still treadmill wary when I am on. I did go on to finish all the other treadmill runs and earn my keep.

That's hilarious!!!!! I've had similar treadmill challengers hop on the "dreadmill," as my wife calls it, next to me and try to one up me. Never had one fall off though. They usually realize pretty quickly just how fast 9-10mph is and give up. My older brother shared a story with me of his son falling off a treadmill at a hotel they were staying at. His son was only 4 or 5yrs old at the time, and decided to get on a treadmill. The little guy actually figured it all out on his own. My older brother was watching from a distance. His son Dalton gets on the treadmill and cranks up the speed. Steps on it and gets shot off the back being thrown across the small hotel workout room, hits the far wall and crumples to the ground. Looks around to see if anybody saw him, and then walks away without making a sound!

Yep twice. Another one related to navy ships but it wasn't somebody else taking the dive it was me. In my defense both ships were out to sea, so I like to say it was a pitch and roll that caught me off guard. But I digress. The first time I was a midshipman on a summer cruise. We were somewhere in the middle of the pacific, I jump on the TM and start in at a pretty good pace, just under about 10mph. Then the one hot girl on the whole ship starts on the treadmill right next to it. To this day I don't know what I did wrong, I didn't look left, I didn't look right, I don't remember catching the edge of the treadmill. What I do remember is hitting the treadmill hard and getting shot off the back on to a mat. Workout rooms on ships (even the big ships) aren't that big. The treadmills are literally rubbing up against each other sometimes. I remember the hot girl getting startled and grabbing the bars as I was hitting the mat. That being said, I've fallen plenty in other running scenarios when not on a treadmill, and I must say it didn't hurt that much. I hardly had a hint of a bruise. It's much better than hitting asphalt.

Anyway, I'd like to say that I jumped up on the treadmill and had some smart comment to throw at the one pretty sailor chick on the ship but I didn't. I just felt like an idiot and kept running.

My second time I was on an aircraft carrier in the Med during Operation Iraqi Freedom. This time, the boat, took a big roll. I was doing a workout that day and was probably at about 5:15 pace so I didn't have enough time to account for the sudden shift. Again, I was on my ass and out the back on to a mat. Everybody knew me as the guy that would "run fast" and "forever" on the treadmills. Well, after that I'm pretty sure I was known as the guy that fell of the treadmill. Now that room was packed with treadmills and bikes as it was a strictly aerobic workout room. There were a ton of people in there so this one also was a blow to the ego. Once again, I just got back up and started running again. What else could I do? And again, the treadmill made for nice fall. Didn't really suffer any ill effects from the crash.

I've fallen before. Was looking in the window reflection to get a glimpse of this hot chick behind me working out and got to close to the edge. There's no way you can play that off.

I have to spend a fair amount of time on relatively small (<300 feet long) research vessels--some of them have treadmills. One a recent trip, the treadmill was in a small compartment with a low overhead, backed up against a bulkhead. Since we frequently see some weather, it had been bolted to the deck. A ceiling panel had been pulled from the overhead, presumably to make room for the users head.

Now I'm 6 feet tall, so I needed the hole in the ceiling. I got on the mill and started running. Every time the ship pitched (the treadmill was up in the bow) I lurched forward and hit my forehead on the forward ceiling panel frame. That would knock me back a little, and my back foot would kick the bulkhead to my rear. I would bounce forward, hit the forward frame...etc, etc, etc. It was a good education in feedback loops.

After two attempts, I shifted to the stationary bicycle for the rest of the cruise. So much for staying in shape.

Never fallen off a treadmill, but was showing off for girl on the universal leg press machine in high school. I thought that there was about 200lbs on it, but it was taken off and only 40lbs were on. I pushed hard and the foot pedals flew in the air, came back down and dug into my shins. I still have the scars to prove it. And no I didn't get the girl.
