When I was running in college through downtown Philadelphia, one of my teammates took a free sample from a cigarette girl. He continued to run through the streets at a brisk pace while smoking. It was so funny and so ironic to see someone smoking, while running!
Hopefully, he didn't continue to repeat this joke, because 17.2% of all male smokers will die from lung cancer. Only 1.4% of male non-smokers get lung canncer.

i think i read somewhere that robert cheryiout(the one that won boston twice and chicago and was the shit a few years ago) smoked as a boy to help support his appetite or something.

I have a 1:15 half and a 2:47 Marathon at age 44 in 2001, which, while OK, does not match the younger performances, even age graded (would be like 1:12 and 2:34 or something at age 44). Also ripped a 1:24 half at age 52.
It must be the former smoking---though I quit in 1999.
Still love running; just ran the NY Marathon last month in 3:06 at age 53. Luck To All!

Ok brother. Here's to hoping that 3 a day doesn't turn into 5 and then 10 and then 30. If you saw how miserable my grandfather was the last 15 years of his life, you wouldn't say "so be it" with regards to getting Emphysema.

People smoke to fit in with other people - hardly the Clint Eastwood, or whatever is cool now, image they like to project
Drinking is not going to really help your running, but how many people have a drink first thing every morning and go for a regular top up all day - only alkies

I ran many a mile with this guy and he told me his ambition was to run a hundred yards when he was aged 100. Well he smoked and didn't make 60. This is not to knock him nobody is perfect - but don't use a smoker as running role model
Of course its a role of the dice - he might have been more lucky. But why role the dice smoking makes less sense than taking heroin. It-s a drug with a high less than a cup of tea which can put you in a box early. Its not macho or cool, its just stupid
Ron Hill smoked off and on throughout his career--probably still does. He ran 2:09:27 when only one guy (Clayton) had ever run faster (and that was on a questionable course). Hill ran in three Olympics, won two British XC championships, set several world track records for long distances (10M, 20K, etc.), and won many, many big races including the Boston and Euro Champs marathons. He was a very tough character, but he fought hard not to smoke and often lost the fight. His two-book autobiography, "The Long Hard Road," is worth reading if you really love the sport; he describes virtually every run he ever did, but there are very valuable pieces of training and racing advice in there if you stick with the long hard read.

My grandpa ran hurdles and was a serious athlete and pro baseball player in his youth, plus a heavy lifetime smoker. It was visiting him as a kid with him wheezing from emphysema in his Lazy-Boy hooked up to an oxygen tank - before he died of lung cancer - that made me never want to start smoking. It horrified me as a little kid. Of course back then people didn't know as much about the disease causing potential.
Whatever pleasure there is in smoking couldn't have been worth what amounted to years of torture from the disease it caused.
For someone famous, the great Jesse Owens was a heavy smoker and died of lung cancer at age 66. Sad.

My sig other is 44 years old, no previous family history of heart disease. He smoked a pack a day from about age 17 until a month ago when he quit cold turkey.
He quit cold turkey because he was diagnosed with coronary artery disease - the disease was advanced enough when (very fortunately) caught that he had 90% blockages and was admitted immediately to the cardiac ICU, where he stayed for 13 days (can't smoke while confined to bed in an ICU with oxygen being piped in).
He had quadruple bypass surgery the Monday before Thanksgiving. He's still recovering, but should be OK by mid-January to go back to work. But it's been an incredibly rough ride -- cardiac bypass surgery is about as invasive as surgery gets, and it takes a long (and painful) time to heal.
Nope. He doesn't smoke any more.

For the obtuse out there (like people who believe the Onion is true or who haven't gotten the news about what smoking does to your health), the point of this article is to show that "mproper correlation or extrapolation of data can result in dangerously flawed conclusions."
That is, the conclusion the study purports to reach is wrong, and is an example of the misuse of scientific evidence.
