No, really its whatever the coach feels like marking off that is somewhere close to 5k, or 3 miles, or whatever.

The South Regional times are a bit fast because the course was lengthened in 2015 to a 5K. Webb's 13:57 at Burke Lake (2.98mi) works out to about a 14:30...the course is both slow (many turns) and fast (partially on road) so maybe a break even?

The Sunken Meadow 5 mile course for the IC4A championships in the fall of '79 was no walk in the park either.

Pffffffft. I know a kid who ran 11:33 as an 8th grader in a legit meet, on a legit course.

Virgin's record is nearing 50 years. It has survived attempts by Jim Spivey, Tom Graves, the Torres brothers, Matt Withrow, Chris Derrick and Lukas Verzbicas to name just a few.

John gregorek ran 15:32 there. We all know that he eventually went on to run a 3:51 mile (3rd fastest American ever at the time) and was a two time Olympian in the steeple. The only one to beat his SM performance is Edward cheserek, in 15:20.

Couldn't agree more on the difficulty of Sunken Meadow. Routinely 9:20 guys struggle to crack 17 there. The course has actually also been lengthened a little bit since Hurricane Sandy as the land bridge that you run across washed out to sea and now theres a bridge slightly farther down than where the land bridge was. My team ran at Holmdel, Bowdoin and VCP each year as well and Sunken Meadow was another level.

The answer to this question will be decided on Nov 4th at Detweiller park.

Ritz split something like 8:58 through 2 miles when he ran 14:10. Ran 8:41 3200m as a junior and never had an opportunity for a really fast 2 mile bus senior year. He probably would have given Nelson’s 8:36 a scare

Goucher's 14:55 in XC his senior year at altitude is up there for all-timer performances IMO.

Ive heard that a lot of the course by NJ are long and labeled as 5k's? Potentially one of Chesereks performances on those courses would have been up higher in the rankings if it was a real 5k

I'm from Jersey and haven't heard anything about our courses being long. They just end up being tougher/not as flat courses except for Ocean County Park, otherwise there's only a few sub 15's in history outside of the faster courses.

Not sure what you are talking about. The bridge that replaced the old strip of land that was washed out by Super Storm Sandy is in the same place. Look on Google Earth and use the historical images tool. In fact it might be a few yards shorter.
