Why would it be bad coaching if he doesn't break 2:07? The course record is 2:07:43 and the winner has only gone sub 2:09 9 times in the past 40 years. Ritz is arguably not fit to tie Tergat's shoes and he only ran 2:09:30 to win. NYC is a tough marathon. It is bad coaching to not have him ready for the fast 5k that inevitably comes on First Ave but not because he didn't coach him under 2:07.

Ritz ran for the money, there is no way Salazar should have let him run this race coming off of six months of injuries. You just can't get ready for a world class marathon in a few months. The biggest mistake Salazar made was letting Dathan run NYC this year. In addition, both of their egos got in the way and they tried to convince themselves and all of us that he was in 2:08 shape....many of us didn't bite and predicted 2:11 -2:12. I still don't get it...well, the money part I get.
He's not "getting ready in a few months". He's been running for the last 12 years at least.
Steve Jones ran a WR 25 years ago with a couple of 20 milers tacked on the end of a long season of track and CC.

Running 20 miles at 4:50 pace is very very crazy, even for a guy as fit and talented as Mr. Ritzenhein.
If I were his coach, I would have stopped him at about 14-15 miles.
