I was just calling his by his proper title; however, Coe's father Peter was an engineer (who applied his expertise to distance training for his son) and coached Seb all his life pretty much. Most runners do not have this advantage. Anyway, my point was class doesn't matter if you can run fast.

There are driven people, rich and poor, everywhere. It is a false argument to claim that poverty is what gives the Kenyans drive. Rather, poverty deprives them of the means to make other kinds of livings. Lacking other opportunities, many more of them decide to stick with running. As a result, there is a greater number of high quality runners...all training together. Their success is that due to the law of averages; if a greater number of talented runners from one country stick with the sport, then that country has a country chance of outcompeting a more prosperous nation, where some of the most talented may instead to decide to become an engineer or doctor or a lawyer or a plumber.

To answer your question...I'm not denying that Peter Coe was self taught. However, if you have a father who's smart enough to revolutionize how to coach a middle distance runner and guide your son to world records, in my book that's an advantage most runners do not have. I'm not saying his father was a royal scumbag or anything. But not everyone has a father with the talent to become a world class middle distance coach. Everyone understands this was a big advantage for Seb along with his awesome talent.

If you are a former OSU runner who thinks Smith is not a good coach, then just come right out and say _exactly_ what you think it wrong.

Stop being such a coward posting anonymous rants about the coach. Be a man. Who are you? Why _exactly_ is Smith a lousy coach?

Right now, your post carry zero credibility since you provide no details about what, in your opinion, Smith is doing poorly. You are just posting a bunch of vague complaints which make you sound like someone with a psychological problems.
