I have you at 24th (1976) and tied for 46th (1979) on the 10k nats list. 1977 is roughly 70th, need a couple more 1976 times to nail it down.

The NCAA News that Hodgie-San linked has d2, d3 results on page 4.
UC-Irvine went 1,2,3 with Serna, Scott, Hulst.
In d3 Hodge was runner-up, and defending champ Vin Fleming was 13th.

Yes, the D3 race was a big disappointment for me. It was run just after a snowstorm in Cleveland. I did not wear spikes and took a pretty bad spill while leading the race. My teammate Vin Fleming had won the year before in Boston.
Virgin was world cc champ in 81.

Hello McFly?
1979 was another impressive year for College XC. Rono went 28:19 and Salazar 28:27 on Leigh's course which reading from this thread, is much harder than Denton. I finished 19th in 29:44
The next 2 years in Lawrence Kansas was a flat fast course, however, other than UTEP, the foreign in vasion was subsiding.
If I recall correctly, they hit the mile mark in 4:17 or so....weren't 80 and 81 in Wichita?

Yes, they were. I was in the 81 race and the first mile was mostly downhill. I think I was 4:40-ish and in almost last place, LOL. Matthews Motschwaretu (sp?) won it that year, ahead of Musyoki, with a recently-injured Nyambui further back in top 10 and Alan S. the top American in ... 7th?Winning time 28:46, I think. I was around 31:20 and near the rear, haha

Sorry..I couldn't eactly remember the place and guessed wrong on the location. The 1st mile was downhill and fast. I think I was 4:19, 8:55 for the 1st 2 miles then it slowed down quite a bit. It was a go out fast, hang on type of race.
Leigh race was also crazy fast. I remember being in the corn field at the mile mark, going through in 4:35 somewhere in the middle of the pack and thinking I blew it by not getting out quicker. I just kept my head down and just moved up through the pack passing a lot of guys who were hurting from going out to fast.
The results from the AAU XC race make for an interesting comparison.
That course at Belmont in Philadelphia is incredibly hilly, with some severe turns and pathways that are rocky and uneven. In other words a gritty course. The Philadelphia Catholic League still runs every meet on this course. I had the opportunity to run the 10K version one time - it was painful and I'm glad I never had to run it again.
malmo, could you also post the top 50 from '77&'78?
Thanx

77' was pretty cold as well. Pre-tights days - our coach bought us nylons to wear. They came in handy with the false starts fiasco of 77.

I only ran in one other race that was nearly as crazy as this one. That was the 1981 World Champs in Madrid where the US team finished second to Ethiopia. The Ethiopians took off early thinking they were on the finish lap and it took it out of everyone. Malmo still has a blister on his thumb from playing PacMan before the race.
Blame it on YOU. You were the one who found that game. My middle finger is permanently bent from the Pac-Man joystick.
At the starting line the entire team got together in a ring, with our fists shoved together in the center like a college team, and sang the Pac-Man Intermission song!
