Looking at who he was near and who he beat, it was NOT a JV race by any means. All of these top athletes, regardless of who was in the long race, trained to peak for this event and Goucher was 6th. That's insane to me.

This might be on of the most underrated U.S. performances of all time.

Agreed. How many Americans can claim to have finished within 10 seconds of Bekele in any race over a mile? This was Goucher's best race, better than his 13:10 and near (but not quite at) the level of Ritz' 12:56.

Bekele in the first race of a double that weekend. He wasn't singling like Goucher was so he wasn't anywhere near as close to redline as Goucher was in that race. Goucher took one so-so scalp, probably of a runner who ran because his federation required it and few of those runners were peaking for that jayvee race. This is like the stupid Pre legend all over again. 6th in that race isn't all that, kiddos.

If you don't know these names, you can't actually be all that much of a fan of the sport.
