No, they play 90 minutes minimum, running back and forth, sometimes sprinting, with the ref having to run the farthest distance as he has to follow the ball. On average those seem very reasonable.

Well, let's look at this "reasonable" assumption.
A World Cup ref averages 2 games per week.
They all admit to "jogging" 2-5 miles when not reffing a match.
So, am I to believe that a person who only runs about 10 miles total otherwise for the entire week, then goes out and sprints or does a 12 mile interval workout 2x per week?
I am not a soccer fan. I have watched some parts of games, and I have noticed that the ref's do not run the entire length. they let-up when they get close to the action. The stop and stand in one spot for a decent amount of time. I am not putting them down, I just don't believe they run 12 miles per game. If a field is 100 yards (approx.), so
a conversion of one mile in yards? 1000 yds = .56 mile.
ten trips up and back, and he has run 1/2 mile.
This means, the ref would "run" as you say, 211+ times back and forth for one game. full length. No stopping.
I mean I could say I ran a marathon, but stopped every time I had a penalty and wanted a drink or to pee, or halftime. That's like saying you ran one hundred miles, but only 5 miles at a time.
Sorry, not buying it.
They do not run the full length 211 times.
and, when I watched, they were not in all-out sprints. Hardly ever.
