This can be a good thing for "real" Olympic Trials runners. Assuming he doesn't make it (long shot) it will show the American public, Runner's World crowd, and ultras only people that it is difficult to qualify and not possible for the "fitest man on the planet".
You guys who doubt him are ignorant. I have seen him run 100 milers while closing the final marathon in 2:27 with ease. Surely he could run a 2:15 with specific training.

I think Karno's good for the sport and think it's pretty funny that he's so hated on this board. That said, he's not a racer, and those who compete over 26mi know that the difference between 2:50 and 2:19 is friggin' enormous. Those in their forties know that the challenges are multiplied.
Dean won't run a 2:19, but if he gets an exemption or some other invite to be on the starting line, it would bring a lot of added attention to the race and other qualifiers, including all the negative threads sure to pop up on LR. Most advocates of the sport would see that as a win-win.

No way would this be a good thing. Think of all the guys who will work their asses off in an attempt to make the trials and miss by 1,2 or 5 minutes, it would be incredibly insulting to disallow those guys to run the trials and allow Dean to run as he will no way break 2:35.

I would agree it would be bad to give him an exemption, but I think it would be good if he got a legitimate qualifying time. Like it or not, Dean is a good promoter.

The comments on this thread look like stuff one might see on the Runner's World web site. Are people seriously talking about a midpack jogger qualifying for or getting an exemption to run in the Olympic trials? How about throwing Lance Armstrong into the mix? How about Oprah on the starting line of the women's race?
I understand that letting celebrities participate in serious competitive events can "bring a lot of added attention" to those events and its other participants, but I don't understand the assumption that such attention would be, on bablance, a good thing. I also don't understand your use of the term "win-win" in this context. For those of us who care about things like adherence to standards and a sense of fair play, it wouldn't be "win-win." It would just be a cynical bid for attention that would demean the event and benefit only a few insiders who want to goose the ratings.

I can tell you that things like the Olympic Trials have and always will be so far off Dean's radar.
Mind you, I think a fast(er) marathon would help his credibility among some of the LetsRun crowd.
In the end there are the aspirational and inspirational runners, Dean reaches and aims for the latter. In today's times there are far more charity runners than those who compete and are performance based.
Dean is great for getting people inspired and into fitness activities, if you want him to go away you need to take those same people and turn them into competitors. When the avg marathon time gets far closer to 3hrs then 4 you'll have done your job and maybe a BQ will mean something again as well...

The notion of 'any publicity is good publicity' hardly applies to an anemic sport with a public perception of being a circus (or maybe more like a carnival sideshow) of PED rats and unathletic middle-aged huffers.
actually i like the idea of him getting an exemption. then every single guy there can go out, even the guys having crappy races, and beat the ever loving crap out of dean. we regularly have guys running alomost 230 at the trials- they would still crush dean on race day, that would be the end all way to shut dean up, to lose to EVERY SINGLE GUY ON THE LINE. sweetness, now somebody go pitch it to dougie logan.
It is a shame that a person that has reverted to using doping has indicated that he may attempt this type of goal. There is concrete evidence of his drug use and he fully understands that he cannot take the chance to being tested due to his popularity.
And for those of you that think I do not have basis in what I am saying, you are wrong and I have also raced against him in one of his "very important" races and I was hours ahead of him, so I am not a bitter poster to this blog.
He is a great marketer and makes many people motivated. It is just a shame that he has had to revert to drugs and lies about his accomplishments to continue to make money.
