Great idea if you only plan on working at that school for a year. After that, they'll catch on.
Why don't you make a point system? I don't know what you've already set in place for your standards but just throwing numbers out, lets say
sub 6:30 = 25 points
6:30-7:00 = 20 points
7:00-7:30 = 15 points
7:30-8:00 = 10 points
8:00-8:30 = 5 points
8:30 + = 0 points
You could do a system like that, then say you add 1 point for every second you took off your initial time.
So you could have some girl who runs 7:05 in her first trial, gets 15 points. Second time around she runs 6:50, so gets 20 points plus 15 points for her improvement. So she has 45 points.
Another girl sucks on her first trial and runs 8:25, she earns 5 points. She gets motivated and starts running a little more and gets in somewhat decent shape and in the second trial runs 7:55. She gets 5 points for her first time, 10 points for her second, and 30 for improving 30 seconds. She ends up with 45 points as well.
This way it rewards kids who improve and those who are already good, but still holds them accountable on the first try.
