I don't think anyone would have a problem with Stember if he wasn't such a conceited, arrogant asshole. That's at least how I feel about the situation. I remember being in an indoor 3k a few years ago, we were all at the start line and someone asked one of the Nike guys (not Stember) what they were planning on running. Without hesitation, Stember blurts out (and I really mean 'blurts' by all definitions of the word) "seven fourty five!" without even looking at the guy. Total f***ing asshole doesn't even make eye contact with anyone. Then the greatest thing EVER happened. The jerk-off runs something like 8:20. I don't think I've ever been happier at someone elses bad race.
Another great moment in "I hate Michael Stember history" was at one of Stanfords outdoor meets either 2 years ago or last year. He had just won the 800 (not a great time, maybe barely under 1:49) and the announcer was giving him his due for winning. Stember had been taking a victory lap and on the backstretch where all the seating is, he was running by the people in the bleachers (attempting to) give high fives to the fans, who were completely unresponsive. I think maybe 3 or 4 out of the 60 or so people standing by the railing actually acknowledged that he was running by. It was great.
