former oregon 800 meter star david mack still #3 on the all time USA 800 meter list with his 1:43.35 for 800 meters was released from prison on may 14th 2010, he was convicted of bank robbery and police corruption, he was also a suspect in the murder of rapper christopher wallace aka the notorious BIG. mack was the high school boyfriend of florence griffith-joyner. under california law due to his previous felony conviction, he can no longer be a policeman in california. hopefully he can get a job coaching the middle distance runners at the university of oregon, where he was a star, though not the school record holder (which is juaquim cruz).

i met mack and don ward.

mack in my experience was a very nice guy, talked of how tommy the hitman hearns would grow into being heavy weight champion, a sharing guy.

i don't recall any incident where mack was a detriment to the team or community. but there may be.

mack was a big, a HUGE crowd favorite however. time and again he brought the crowd and meet to a climax with the win in the 1600 m relay, and often the 800m same day.

mack did not show a PED profile, thought later on in the career, it is definitely a possibility. with flojo she started using many years after oregon when she went from 11 seconds 100m average good to fastest all time overnight and after sprinters prime time age.

mack did seem to have his own ideas about life, probably ways from the hood, core values that the world did not change. to me this is the big question. it looks like mack did not find core values and truths in the non-hoot world that he could grasp, use and make meaning of.

you might conclude he found the regular good old usa to be a pile of bullshit.

maybe mack's concept of morality he's done the right thing. maybe he thinks the guys he maybe robbed were crooks, maybe the guys he maybe shot, he thought were murders? maybe he thinks he's a good guy because he took 14 years and never ratted anyone out?

or maybe mack, like so many of us is delusional. in one way or another. we think we're doing right when we're going left.

anyway son, whatever the case and whatever the reason, don't do what they say david mack did.

Apparently, David Mack has taken up cycling and is really quite good. Talent does not go away. I like on a route popular with cyclists in Palos Verdes and I always take a little longer look at someone I think may be David. It would be interesting to see what kind of a sprinter he is on the bike.

As a police officer, the guy had almost as much job security as anyone could hope for, had all the other cop benefits, including a fine pension. And he tossed it all away, spent, what?, 14 years in prison, all for $700,000.

He's terrible role model and shouldn't be allowed anywhere around young people....Even in our present permissive society we shouldn't be having ex-felons as coaches...Maybe this is okay in S. Central but not anywhere I would send MY kids....

I'm sure he wouldn't have been let out of prison unless he is fully rehabilitated, learned the errors of his ways, and is now a productive member of society. And he should be seen as a role model in his community.

Never happen. If Jerry Sandusky served 14 years and was released, do you think it would be ok for him to coach, say, youth football? After all, he served his debt to society.

I too, met Mack at Oregon. He was a very nice guy. Unfortunately for him, you can take the man out of the hood but you can't take the hood out of the man. If his track career hadn't ended prematurely, he might have avoided all that, but joining the LAPD when he did sealed his fate, particularly when he became Rafael Perez's partner.

There are really only two rational choices when it comes to a prisoner:

1. Never let them out of prison.

2. Let them out and give them a chance to succeed in society.

David Mack was released from prison. Ergo we should all be hoping, out of self-interest if nothing else, that he finds at least some degree of legitimate success. I, for one, am not eager to see what happens if/when he concludes that he has no legal means by which to support himself*.

* Yeah yeah yeah, there's the 350K or 700K or whatever that he supposedly has stashed away, but the only source I've seen for that is, "he was said to have bragged to other inmates that ...." Taking that as the truth is to stupid what running 1:43 is to the 800 meters.
