My bad. He ran 3:38.5 at USATF his senior year in HS. That's his 1500m PB.

Why would the time matter, if you win the race?

OK then lets play by those rules. What is the best field that he has beaten? A weak year in the Big 10? HS State Meet? Footlocker South Region?

HE DIDN'T WIN
3:53 win or lose, he ran 3:53. all the bashing in the world will not take that away.
With the olympics around the corner I would not put any stock in any time that he is running right now. Keep in mind that he is a 1500 guy, not a 3000 guy. Nor is he a XC runner but he still is running those events and placing well. After the month of racing that he has done its no supprise that his kick is a little weak.
I'll be the first to say it. Come Oly trials, Webb will be very hard to beat over 1500 meters. With the aerobic strength he is showing now, and a proper peak, he will be very fast at the trials. My guess is that he has been building for the olys sence he left the collegiate system.
He gets 250k a year because he gets the press and exposure. He sells Nike, period. If he was running 4:30 for the mile and people were taliking about him this much he would still be making 250k a year. His running ability has nothing to do with his contract. His ability to prompte Nike is the only factor. Every time he steps to the line there are 3 threads about him on this board, regardless the outcome.
I just cannot play by any 'rules' here. The kid is an excellent, young runner and anybody who thinks he is not is being silly. Perhaps he doesn't win as much as you'd like, nor as easily as you might expect, but that's the nature of the game, isn't it? I just can't fathom what this negativity is trying to prove. Would you prefer he retire from racing? Emigrate to Canada (we'd welcome him here, I can assure you)? Really, what is the point?

Best winning time vs pr:
Torres-14:05 @ Big 12 indoors 2000 vs pr of 13:24 outdoors
Ritz-13:55@this years Big 12 vs outdoor pr of 13:27
Lincoln-8:22pr steeple @ NCs 2002, 28:20pr 10k @ NCs 2003
Kennedy-27:38pr 10k @ Stanford '99
Krummenacker-1:45.99 outdoors vs 1:43.92pr outdoors, 1:45.69i(pr), 2:17.85i(pr)
these guys are a start. lincoln has prs winning, but his 5k and 3k prs are not victories. Kennedy never had his best 5k time of the year in a victory. torres and ritz dont have outdoor 5k victories that were their best times of the year. Krummenacker has managed to run well and win indoors, but is well off his outdoor pr in his best victory outdoors. he also has no best times in the 1500/mile that were victories.
I think we can assume fastest winning time is an unreliable measure for U.S. distance runners. all of these guys have prd in a race in which they lost, which is exactly what webb did this weekend, i'd say that is better than losing and not setting a pr. does this mean that no american distance runner can handle the pressure? no. stop ripping webb for something that happens to all U.S. runners.
i predict webb dpesn't make the finals of the outdoor usatf 1500m. that he then gets a new coach and blossoms next year.
Anonymous predictions don't really count, thought, do they?
If you're wrong, who's to know?
Register as a Letsrun.com user, post with your real name and you may find yourself taken a bit more seriously.
Now, you can find my posts fairly easily, so I'll say this:
Alan will make the US Olympic team at 1500 metres this year.
Martin
wow, martin, i feel like i know so much about you based on your name. way to lay it on the line like that.
martin, posting on letsrun, has said webb will make the olympic team! such credibility! so much at stake!
i say you're wrong. when the event transpires as i predict, i'll return and make you eat crow, oh ye of laying-it-on-the-line.
I'm not sure why my prediction is to be ridiculed whist yours taken seriously, but I will say this:
You'll return as another no-name wanker-poster still trying to figure out the password on his daddy's laptop.
I'll still be here, posting under the same name and trading emails with various adults on this site who don't hide behind clever screen names like "yo".
Good luck breaking 20 in your next 5K.
Martin
how do we know your name is martin? you are just as anonymous as i am, except for the fact that you spend more time than i do posting here. and why the abuse? i was simply pointing out that my prediction carries as much weight as yours; we're both posters on a message board, and although you claim your name is martin, in the grand scheme of things we're both anonymous. it's an internet message board; you get what you pay for. now, if you were a newspaper columnist and your prediction would be printed..by the way, i'm 27, retired from running, with a 14:07 5k best. but, of course, that could just be a figment of my imagination. we'll never know, i guess..

I've been posting with the same name -- my own name -- on this board since the autumn of 2001.
I've met the Brojos in Ireland and have, as mentioned, traded emails with more than a few posters on this board.
I'll be here tomorrow. I'll be here next week. I'll be here next year.
You, on the other hand, are one of the scores of flotsam posters that duck in and out of the board posting usually negative (and often libelous) bunk.
This is why I bashed your prediction: dropping nameless critical posts from a screen name that exits only for a day is, in my mind and the mind of many others on this board, worthless.
If you've got something to say, pick an identity, stick with it, register with the site and develop some consistency.
And I hope you do.
My apologies for the 5K insult -- it shouldn't matter how fast any of us are, as long as we're fans of the sport and willing to share opinions.

I'VE MET THE BROTHERS, TOO. WHOOP-DE-DO.
I'll be here tomorrow. I'll be here next week. I'll be here next year.
I HAVE OTHER PLACES TO BE, GENERALLY.

WHAT DID I POST THAT WAS LIBELOUS?
This is why I bashed your prediction: dropping nameless critical posts from a screen name that exits only for a day is, in my mind and the mind of many others on this board, worthless.
AND EVERYTHING YOU POST HERE IS PRICELESS?
I HAPPEN TO THINK WEBB NEEDS A NEW COACH AND A NEW ENVIRONMENT. I STATED THAT SUCCINTLY. YOU DISAGREE. FINE. WE CAN ARGUE UNTIL WE'RE BLUE IN THE FACE, BUT THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS WHAT HE DOES THIS SUMMER.
If you've got something to say, pick an identity, stick with it, register with the site and develop some consistency.
FROM NOW ON I WILL POST AS MEGAMAN, DEFENDER OF THE UNIVERSE. I WILL REPEATEDLY BASH WEBB, SECOND-GUESSING HIS EVERY MOVE.
SEE, IT'S NOT ABOUT THE IDENTITY, OR ABOUT BEING CONSISTENT; IT'S ABOUT MAKING LOGICAL, SENSIBLE, FACT-DRIVEN ARGUMENTS. GUESS WHAT? THERE IS NO DISCOURSE LIKE THAT ON THIS BOARD; IT'S RARE. HENCE I WRITE A FEW SENTENCES ON OCCASSION, CONTRIBUTE WHEN SOMEONE ASKS ABOUT RUNNING IN THE AREA WHERE I LIVE, BUT IN GENERAL IGNORE THE CHAOS THAT REIGNS HERE.
GO PICK ON SOMEONE ELSE. I'M DONE.

and i'm the one who was singled out for posting something negative...
You were singled out for being a coward hiding behind an ever-changing screen name, not merely for being negative.
Nice to see you've got your keyboard sorted out, though.
Martin
i see. so if i post under my first name, i have a right to be a royal ass just like you?
what heroism you display! you're no coward, martin! tell me again how i'm an idiot! how my caps lock is on! and all the other enlightening stuff you've treated us to!
martin, the courageous, bold knight of the letsrun message board! the cunning linguist who vanquishes irony and smites rational thought with just a few strokes of his keyboard.
adios, my dear friend, be proud of the stand you've made against my cowardly prediction and the lesson you've taught. huzzah!
