Solinsky may not run another one this year, but, as someone else pointed out, may have his sight set on the 5k AR. 27:10... still frigging impressive. Imagine if he would've popped it in Oregon on Friday. He would've had the AR for only one day. Definitely something special in the drinking water in Oregon.
I meant Rupp. And, yes, the Friday night thing was obviously a hypothetical. Probably wouldn't have happened there in any event. But Rupp's target for the summer is probably pretty high now. To go under the AR and get one-upped in the process, knowing full well that the sub-27:00 milestone has probably always been a goal for the year, he'll have his sights set even faster.
One question I have is, did Solinsky have 27:00 written into his contract as a bonus incentive? He may well not have unless he recently renewed. That would be one bitter victory last night if not.
People giving Rupp a hard time are more than losers. The guy works his butt off and is about the only distance runner who openly says I'm going for an AR and then goes out and delivers. Did it twice indoors for 5K and now here. Unfortunately the last 2 were not awarded to him because others in the field went faster. Imagine the frustration for Rupp, but he keeps plugging away and getting faster.
If a bad day for Rupp is breaking a long standing AR in a long difficult race by doing the guts of the work involved and you get stung in the end and still break the mark, you know you are a damn good runner.
Let's remember that Meb was dragged along to his all the way to the line. Rupp carried his own weight to pass Mebs mark and something tells me if he hadn't had those 3 guys sitting off of him and then going by like that he could have run his own way to 27:05. That is just DAMN fine running.
At the long distance events (5K-10K) there has been nobody in the college or pro level in the U.S. more consistently great than Rupp. For some reason that attracts hatred from a select and small but very loud and obnoxious few. People commenting on Rupp not rushing over to hug Chris after he was sniped by him exemplafies the level of rationality behind the hatred. Taking it a step further to make it seem like he wanted to get away and was then directed to Chris is childish at best.
It's efforts like this that make me more of a fan of Rupp. Makes a seemingly bold statement, goes out and does it even while he knows he's being used. Get's throttled by the bandwagon in the end and now, like many times before he'll pick himself up and come back bigger. That to me is simply badass. Galen could have turned it into a race last night. He could have let up or stepped out to lane 2 and basically said, "hey if you can handle the pace you can help with it". After all Cardinal invite is a time trial affair. There are no awards, no teams to be made or championships to be won. The only thing to earn is a fast time, or in this case an AR and a huge barrier to break. Rupp was the one who made it all possible, without him none if happened and just some guy runs a darn fast time and perhaps would have gotten the AR. Rupp ensured that it happened.
The guy should be celebrated, not hated.
To me Ritz is the same way.
Rupp is Drago

What did he pay for it with? His job at McDonald's? Because mine didn't pay enough for altitude tent rentals, I'm quite sure.
Take your head out of your ass (not sure if that would help you).
First off he didn't rent an altitude tent, second, please correct me and source it if i'm wrong, but he didn't even use a tent in HS if i remember correctly. He lived at home, and paid to train as part of the NOP, i believe a few of his other teamamtes/locals might have as well? Wall maybe? He used an underwater treadmil, but i don't actually recall him living with the NOP athletes.
Pathetic ass***** like you like to change history.
Second, it's called parents. And you don't have to be rich to do that.

The guy fights hard every race (I've haven't seen them all, but I've never seen him "dog" one), he's made a complete commitment to his running, he fulfilled his commitment to his university (with tremendous competitive success), and he seems to be doing everything he can to maximize his talent (which is enormous but not, perhaps, the most of any American).
As Solinsky was the first to acknowledge, Rupp is why there's a new American record in the 10,000 (along with a CR and a host of PRs).
What does Rupp have to do to change his image? Nothing. What do other people have to do, to change their perception of him? Well, that's their affair. Envy is a tough habit to break.
I'm a member of the "running community." Galen Rupp has my support.
People are jealous because they see the potential and lack of fear. Rupp will eventually be well under 27 in the 10k, never mind breaking 13 in the 5k. He's hated because of his willingness to put it on the line. He's hated because he hasn't been brainwashed into being a PC pussy like 99% of the "runners" on this board and elsewhere who believe only an E. or N. African can run under 13 or 27. Sure, the brainwashing has been put in place by academics and the PC media, but there's enough cognitive dissonance for these pussies to be disturbed by Rupp. They'll look for reasons to hate to hate Solinsky soon enough. A lot of this covers why these same jealous, cowardly bastards hate Webb and rejoice when he's gone through problems.
What a stupid post. I highly recommend ignoring it!
Funny things about last night
1. How everyone sitting on Rupp had their own reason for not helping him out.
Rupp sat on Chelanga the entire NCAA XC champs. Remember the Oly trials when Rupp "outkicked" Solinsky in the heats waving to the crowd, and though i didn't see the race and maybe he wasn't sitting on him the entire time he outkicked Solinsky to make the indoor worlds team. I don't think there's any love lost between Rupp, Chelanga and Solinsky.
2. No the record wouldn't have fallen without Rupp and his rabbits, but thats the point, Rupp is the only one who can have his own rabbits. If the race had gone the way he wanted he would have been alone after the rabbits dropped off, and leading anyway, woops.
3. All the drama leading up to the race that I don't need to rehash here. Yes, Rupp can be disappointed for not getting the record, but acting like he deserved it more than anyone else, c'mon.
4. Rupp clearly had a little give up the last 100, you can see in the video that he doesn't run through the line.
Rupp is a perfect stereotype of a runner, embodying the characteristics that other runners hate to admit they see in themselves when they look in a mirror.

The entire NCAA XC champs? Seriously, would you freaking watch that race, instead of just repeating a Big Lie spread by a few hate mongers?

Agreed. Good post. Rupp did most of the hard work last night, and he's got to have his sights set on 26:50 now. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it either. And the kid's only what, 23? Still looks like a boy. Rupp didn't lose anything last night. He essentially made the race and still hung on to dip under the "old" AR.

Exactly.
And all his 'advantages' are because he was hard working and disciplined. His advantages are that he had the maturity and dedication to start training at a very high level in high school. Much of his success has come from that.
I very much doubt he is, in terms of raw talent, near as good as many of the people he beats. He's trained harder, has been scary dedicated, and has stayed healthy. That's the difference. For all the love of McDougal when he outkicked Rupp, I didn't see him yesterday challenging for the AR.
Many if not most of the athletes who used to beat Rupp are no where near his level now.
I've noticed there's almost a universal inverse relationship between accomplishment and hatred of Rupp. Which is precisely why most of Letsrun feels the way it does.
So by the logic of your conclusion, Runners World should hate Rupp even more than Letsrun does.

Nah, he just looks like such a kid.
Ever since high school, Salazar has heralded Rupp as the new age of American distance running. Rupp had a great high school career, but nothing meriting that claim compared to Solinsky, Hall, Ritzenhein, etc. Instead of going to college straight out of high school, Rupp trained for years to gain an age and fitness advantage over everyone else. Only then would he race as a man among boys and pretend his titles were legit. After running for Oregon, the Yankees of collegiate distance, he signed with Nike, who had been clandestinely supporting his whole altered-G, altitude-chamber running career. Salazar continues to discriminate every race as if it require laboratory conditions for performance.
Why do people hate Rupp? He represents the antithesis of what makes our sport great. Running is about overcoming adversity, training hard, dreaming big, and overcoming everything including our very bodies that tell us to quit when our minds will not relent. Rupp has been given every break and advantage just to be able to compete with guys who overcame all the adversity Rupp's proponents mowed down for him
If you can't understand why people despise Rupp, watch Rocky IV and try and comprehend why people despise Ivan Dragon while admiring Rocky. Rupp IS DRAGO, and there is nothing he can do to overcome his image. It is his identity

something about his looks, the hype, the special treatment, and the apparent unwillingness to race outside of perfect conditions explains the hatred, but the hatred explains why everything he does is criticized. he doesn't wear the compression socks and sleeves, unlike teg and solinsky, but if he did the vitriol would be far greater over them.

1. Except for Ritz, all the others were really nothing special in highschool.
2. Rupp was a year younger than average already, still getting AJRs during his freshman year outdoor tack season as an Oregon duck. He didn't gain a year, he simply missed XC and Indoor (6 months), when he was a year younger anyway. And barely turned 23 before the end of his college career. His titles were won over Chelenga, who is over a year older, and who trained with legendary Tergat. And the Arkansas record holder who was 25. Etc., etc., etc.
3. Oregon doesn't have anything (Alter-G treadmill, etc.) that other top D. 1 programs don't. German's coach says he trains on one of their Alter-Gs, you can just assume that all the other big names in long distance trained on them too.

That clip starts 17:50 into the race, after Rupp spent over half the race in a one man chase pack. Chelenga's whole strategy was to break off Rupp, as he did to the entire field at Pre-Nats. Why would Rupp take the lead, let Chelenga draft off him, let Chelenga have a chance to rest and get back into the race?
i hate Rupp and salazar
The real Men of Oregon would have laughed a puss like Rupp right off the track....I can just imagine Clary breaking his stones just to get him to cry!!
Criticize AlSal, but he was one tough SOB who raced all comers and ran in all kinds of conditions. He did get weird at the end of his career, but that may have been a reaction to all the DMSO he soaked himself in. How he can foster this environment to coddle a little candy boy like Rupp is beyond me. Solinsky\'s a man and ran like one. Rupp\'s a boy and skulked off the track in fitting fashion.
Chelanga beats Rupp. Hell yeah.
