You are correct there. The WADA doesn't ban caffeine, so using it is not cheating. You are correct.
I still thinks its unethical. To me it's still a magic pill, a shortcut, and the performance enhancing effects are well documented. One of the reasons caffeine was removed from the WADA list is because it would be impractical to enforce the restriction (since caffeine is everywhere - soda, coffee, chocolate). That makes sense if you're a large body attempting to regulate a large number of athletes.
But for myself, I can regulate what goes into my body. I'm not going to ingest a magic drug. I think it's against the spirit of the sport, and therefore to me it is unethical.
However, you are free to do what you want. As you say, it's not cheating if the rules don't ban it.
