Ok, now we're getting somewhere. Not because you apologized, but because you seem to recognize the error of your ways. Look, the thing is I've just had it up to here with people saying "white girl" this "white girl" that. "That white girl can run." It gets old, ok.

I take your word that you did not mean to be derogatory. That, however, is indicative of a greater problem. I don't know your ethnicity, I'm new around here. Maybe you've mentioned it before. I don't know and haven't the inclination to search that out. In my experience, though, it is usually only black people who feel the need to drop the "white girl" or "white boy" line. Wonder why that is? My friends of other ethnicities (Hispanic, Asian, various mixes, etc.) have never used such terminology in the context that all too many black people do. At least not to my knowledge. What's the deal there?

What I mean by your not meaning to be derogatory being a greater problem is that so many black people seem to think it's perfectly fine to refer to obviously adult white women and white men as "white girls" and "white boys." Then, when called on it, they give the tired "Oh, I didn't mean anything by it." As if it just comes naturally to be so insensitive and demeaning. Some even come off like they're justified in being demeaning. Can you see where I'm coming from?

I don't know about this NObama character, either. I'm guessing he's not Obama's biggest supporter. Whatever. Neither am I. The thing is, his asking why black people like fried chicken sounds like an obvious troll attempt to me. A lame one at that. I would answer, "Because it's good eatin'!" Don't tell coach, but I've been known to sneak some fried chicken back to the dorm. Once even in-season!

I've attended many step shows in the past 25 years, I have never seen a white frat or sorority "step".

Back in college Greek Week included everyone, and teams were made among "black" and "white" fraternities and sororities. Teams usually consisted of 4 members each, and were mixed up every year. One year, we (Kappa Sigma) were matched with Omega Psi Phi. They let us bark their call, they encouraged us to wear their purple shirts (with our own letters) and gold boots, and then they were blown away by the fact that a good number of us could step right with them. In fact the musicians among us contributed some great ideas to actually make the beats and the choreography more complicated. We EASILY won the step show that year - and our women's team, ZTA and AKA, took second. For some stupid reason, they did away with the step show as part of greek week after that year. It was a blast because everyone got along and learned a hell of a lot from each other. By the end of it all, no one looked at each other the same. This was in South Carolina, by the way, so that experiment quite likely could have ended badly by all accounts. The lesson there is that most of the racism that quietly festers among us does so because of ignorance and misunderstanding and self-segregation. But when we actually work together on something (even for such a silly goal as to win a greek week step show!) people learn that we're all just people.

You sound like a fair minded person. Since you are new to this site you may not be aware of the racist comments made by white people on this site. Letsrun has some of the most bigoted white people of any site I've ever visited. I will confront them on that. If someone black does something bad, they are always called a "thug" by people on this site. To this day, I've never heard a white person referred to as a thug. They can get caught with drugs, kill their family, it doesnt matter. NObama is probably the worst example. There is someone else on here that calls himself "Emmit Till Killed Himself". Emmit Till is a 14yr old child who was murdered by the Klan.

I will admit, I could be wrong. Its hard to believe that many people could be so evil. It could be that a few racist people are posting under different names. I hope that is the case.

Look at you spinning this story to your advantage. I asked you about why the news always shows black people in line at free food giveaways and if you think it's racist? You know good and damn well I didn't say why do black people like chicken. And if you really want to "keep it real" yesterday was national pancake day and it was showing black people in line which prompted me to ask you that question.

Really, its not offensive to me. I dont mind saying I like fried chicken, watermelon and collard greens. Although you must understand that the origin of the stereotype was meant to be offensive. I lived in the south back in 01' and 02'. My job required me to be in customers homes. There were SEVERAL white people who had painted pictures in their home of charcoal black people with VERY big lips eating watermelons. The kind of charicatures you might see in the 1930's. I'm not shitting you!!!! They had the paintings in their homes as if they were artwork. I really think they were too stupid to know they were offensive.

You can only be offended by something if you let it, i.e. if you take yourself too seriously. You give others the power to offend you.

I am still trying to figure out why a distance running site assumingly predominated by distance runners engages in so much race talk. As a former athlete having trained with and competed against athletes from many races and a long time t&f coach of athletes of many races, I have had very few racial issues or even discussions about race. What is it about Letsrun that incites so much talk about race?

I am using the word Black and White in a general sense, because there are white members of what is thought of as Black Greek organizations as well as there being Blacks who are members of what is traditionally thought of as White Greek organizations.

Of course it is unique for a white sorority to win a step show when stepping is not something white sororities generally participate in. Btw, I have seen several white sororities and fraternities step, but I have never seen any non-Black Greek organization this good. I would prefer to focus on the fact that these ladies are quite good regardless of their race. And, btw, stepping not simple, it evolves dance movements, intricate timing and rhythm, lots of attitude and the ability to perform to an extremely parisian crowd. - Those girls were good and that's what really matters.

Nat, I know exactly the kind of pictures you are talking about. Its funny, because about 2 weeks ago I was telling my fiance that some white folks still had these type of pictures in their house and she didnt believe me. My co-workers mom who is about 75 years old has some in her home. They are usually smaller paintings like the type one has in the hallway, bathroom or kitchen. They have "buckwheat or aunt jemima" type of blacks either picking cotton or eating watermelon. They do think it is art work. My co-workers mom was a nice lady, she just didnt know any better. She also kept telling me about the nice colored boy down the street who cuts her grass. I had to chime in on this because I know the type of paintings you are referring to.
