I agree except for when you say it should be self-evident. It isn't always self-evident even with the best. There are always a few willing to criticize, but for the most part they should be pretty popular. Granted, this doesn't automatically make them good. I think you're right about the poetry thing. His lyrics are good, but the songs just don't have much meaning because the music is sort of blah, and his voice is just terrible.
Is it fair to say that the people who like him put an emphasis on the lyrics of songs and the people who don't like him put an emphasis on the music/sound of songs?

Art can often encompass more than music and usually does........Dylan connected with a lot of people through his, as you would say, terrible music and lousy lyrics....and that is ok.....you are allowed to hae you own crappy opinion just like eveyone else; that connection is what made him such a folk hero. In reality he thought little of himself at his prime, just a folk singer who tapped into the feelin of some of the greats like Woody Guthrie, Roy Acuff and even Von Ronk; all who where passing on similiar stories and feeling from days past struggles before their own time.
While you don't have to like Dylan, that is different han declaring he sucks, you obviously missed his point and that is ok. The question I have is wha would you consider important music to yourself and why? Or are you just full of hate everytime someone finds something moving because you never are moved yourself?

I'm interested in what song writers you would rate above Dylan. Given as bad as he is, you must have a half dozen or more better. Additionally, I'd like to have you quote ten of their best lines.
See, with Dylan, you will find that people will cite 100 different songs as among the best and they will be able to quote dozens of whole songs.

Damn, now you're just an idiot; Dylan's from a Eastern European Jewish family who immirated to Minnesota (where Bob was born) to escape anti-semetic riots and persecution, of which many people at that time did; hardly a "rolling" background. Does someone have to been born with one leg and then regenerate for you to consider them "for real".
