Best three magazines for broad information?

Reason Magazine - amazing.

I hope this post was ironic, given that the use of words such as "pedantry" is itself just a touch pedantic. So what are the important facts of the world. Enlighten us, the masses, oh enlightened one. Have mercy on us poor brainwashed souls and relieves of us of our reliance on the dull capitalist liturgy of the Economist.

By the way, I am not saying you do this or that the New Left Review or N+1 are guilty of this, as I am not familiar with those publications but will check them out despite your unbearably condescending, pretentious post, but reading material from only one end of the spectrum, say the "left," is just as bad as the ignorant disrupters of town hall meetings who were recently convinced the government wanted to kill grandma. The Economist is fairly centrist, though it does have a free-market bias. See the most recent issue for examples of its adaptability, though, in regard to major issues of fiscal stimuli, tax rates, etc. Or just flex your didactic diction some more.

I apologize that this post was rambling and hardly coherent. Aside from typos, I meant to say it is wrong to inform yourself from one news source of a particular political stance, regardless of its seeming respectability. I read the Economist all the way through, but also read some of The New Republic, The New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Harper's, Sun Magazine, Huffington Post, and Reason Magazine. It is important to know what everyone is thinking and then draw your opinions.

To the original poster I was responding to: the above comment is not directed to you, I'm just taking the opportunity to say this. I don't know why I feel the need to point this out, given that this is Let's Run, but real life habits are hard to break.

I don't see your list as broad. Only the NE US is just that, a small insignificant part of the world. You should include BBC, Al Jazeera, China Daily, Yomiuri/Asahi, etc.

Yup The Economist has to be there. The FT is also very good - left wingers should actually read it and be surprised.

I also cheat and use collating sites such as Arts and Letters Daily and AP.

Get variety too, such as Asia Times.

I've not bought 'paper' for years and am better informed than those who do!

I don't know if anyone has mentioned "Wired" but it's pretty solid for staying up on trends in technology and business in general.

The value of reading the news is pretty big issue, but even for the cynic, there's value in being perceived as well-informed.

I think The Economist and The Atlantic complement each other nicely. The Economist has nice and short articles with a global perspective. The Atlantic goes into greater depth.

Like an earlier poster, I'd also throw in something from the right side of the political spectrum, because debate fosters greater understanding. The Weekly Standard is alright. It has the virtue of being short. Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy is a more intelligent, though aimed at a narrower audience.

Not the women's magazine you think it is. Even many of the articles on movie stars and such are written with a historical or cultural bent.

And there are many political, in depth articles on the war, ecology, etc.

WARNING: May be considered too liberal for many of the regular LR group but see what the other side is reading so you can be more prepared and impress your dinosaur friends.:)
