13.1 Sticker

Just saw one of those round stickers while I was driving to work, 2,175. Any ideas on that one?

Some things to know about the OBX before you go.

1) The OBX is very big, and it has MANY different areas. Crowds are up north in Nags Head and Kitty Hawk and Duck and Corolla. The VERY quiet areas (where I go) are south in Buxton and Avon and Frisco. There are not crowds there at all, and you can have a very private time on the beach. As there are very strict building laws there, it will NEVER be crowded down there. Plus, down south you can stop to see the Hatteras Lighthouse and take the ferry to Ocracoke Island. Some very good restaurants in and around Buxton and Avon too.

2) Undertow and riptide - yep...need to be careful of those, BUT if you have little kids, you can just allow them to play in the surf and then take them to the sound side and let them walk WAY out in SUPER calm water, looking for (and finding) hermit crabs and other sea life along the way.

So, if it's the crowds you don't like, head to Buxton and see if that's more to your liking. We always stay here -

. I recommend the area and the hotel (which has houses for rent too if you have a big group -- that's what we usually do).

If you want less surf, head to Sanibel Island in Florida or really almost anywhere on the Gulf side of Florida.

That's about the length of the Appalachian Trail. Possibly it refers to thru-hikers

This is true, and one has to wonder about the interpretation or intent. Clearly the 2,175 (officially 2178) refers to the trail length in miles, and accorinding to the official ATC website, 10,000 hikers have "reported" hiking the length. But I am seriously skeptical that that many have actually done all 2,175 miles, and of course, very very few have done the whole thing in one shot (usually 6-7 months), and one might think those are the few who should get to display it- but that would be a pretty damned elite group.

Has anyone seen the "You ran a marathon? How cute" Ironman stickers? I dig those, for sure.

OK, you clearly don't get it.

Speaking only for myself, I have been in races for over 25 years. And, there are many more people out there that have no idea how far a 5k is, marathon is, or any other distance, than you could believe.

However, many of these same people are very proud that they accomplished the distance of 13.1 miles.

They are clearly not at your level.

Do not mock them. Embrace them.

Without them, there would be no races.

Without the 11 min miler, 9 min milers, what would there be? 6 min per mi and faster at every race?

How many people would that be in the races?

No sponsors, no community interest.

I'm telling you, just beacuse they are slow, does not mean they do not have $$ to help fund the races.

I like this website for the insightful knowledge of a sport I passionately love. I hate this website for the wannabe high school kids that talk shit about people that ONLY run 13.1 miles and are proud of it.

When I was in college I remember being a dick like most of you guys and I was only a 1:55 half mile guy.

You guys only post stupid shit like this on here because you are not good at anything else. Being the best runner on your D3 team doesn't make you cool...I promise...it doesn't.
