Figure out what makes you happy and find a way to fit that into your life. 40 comes up fast, but it's not the end of the world -- especially if you don't equate happiness with youth.
I know youthful 60-year-olds and I know old 30-year-olds. You have control over which you turn out to be.
My current girlfriend is 35, and we get along. People assume we are married, but we aren't and plan to stay that way. She already has one divorce under her belt.
I can agree with the folks who castigate 40-year-olds having a midlife crisis, so they go and bang younger chicks to make up for it. That is pathetic. I am much happier dating in my age range.
As for the happily married, more power to you guys. I hope it lasts. I just roll with the stats. We have a 50% divorce rate in this country and an even higher rate of infidelity. There are men now raising kids that they have no clue don't belong to them. My own experience with cheating girlfriends and other problems have only reinforced what I hear from the researchers. I even had a guy in his 60's who was still married after 30 years tell me that it was not worth it.
I think being married to the right woman makes a huge difference, but I think they all got taken a long time ago. I might also add that I have banged some wives and girlfriends who were getting some on the side. I'm sure their husbands think they are in a good situation, but they are really clueless about the truth. I've caught an ex-girlfriend cheating on me, and I was just glad I never popped the question. Human beings are not much better than animals. Monogamy is a myth.
I am pretty happy in my situation, and I don't care to change it. It is married guys who have the doubts and are living a fantasy. I do know one happily married guy who is a friend of mine, and he is ecstatic about his situation. Has two daughters. His wife flirts with me when he leaves the room. It won't be with me, but it will be with some other dude. The funny thing is my friend castigates me for my cynicism on marriage. "Look at me," he says. I'm just going to be his friend and help him pick up the pieces when that time comes. He is a quality individual and deserves better.

Some relationships/marriages do work. You will never know unless you try.

I guess you could follow the example of Logan's Run and kill yourself right before age 40. (In the movie, it is 30).
I am 62, and I feel fine so far. Had both knees replaced, hip replacement, My toenails fell off because of the fungus, I am bald, wear thick glasses, most of my food intake has to be steamed, but you know what? I FEEL GREAT!

It feels fantastic. Use some protection though, you're not ready to be a daddy yet.
