first marathon April 1979, 3:44 at age 20
PR 2:48:12 November 1991, in my 26th marathon
Ran sub-three twelve other times but that was my only sub-2:50.
75 races finished so far at marathon/50K
3:16 as 36 year and running 11 months
2:47 as 41 year old
Only 2, both NY:
1983: 2:29:13 (27)
2006: 2:48:10 (50)
DNF NY 1984.
DNS NY 2008.
i love when people talk of their marathon 'debut' as if it was a historic moment in sport.

Oh wait, half marathon or marathon?
2:59:31 down to 2:40:11 over the course of 12 marathons, and haven't touched that in 23 more since then. (most were fun/travel, but not all)
The first was at 40mpw with no track or hills, it was a hot day, and my execution was bad - net, about as poorly as I could have done.
I have a hard time seeing how people make 1/2 hour or more improvements without having been totally unprepared or just loafing.
I've run 3 marathons in my life and they were all disasters:
Austin Marathon 1987- 2:39 Hit the wall at 21 miles, mostly walked and survival jogged to the finish for 2nd place. That is my PR. The winner passed me at the 25 mile marker and finished in 2:35.
Twin Cities 1995- 3:07 my calves started cramping at 4 miles and by 13 miles both hamstrings cramped up as well. To this day, I can't believe I gutted it out to the finish line.
Rocket City 1995- 2:49 Ran this 2 months after TCM, mostly out of anger at my piss poor showing there. It had to be 34 degrees and a huge headwind for the 2nd half of the race. Hit the wall at 20 miles and was freezing my ass off. Combo walked and jogged it in.
I never ran a marathon again.

ugh.
First: 3:56. Could barely walk to the car after. Could only get out of bed the next day to go to the bathroom.
6 years and 9 marathons later, 2:53. Felt great. Should have run harder. Surprised to have plenty in the tank at the end. Finally figured out how to train and race a marathon. Expect 2:40s next time out.
