Actually there are a few versions of the test and although there are might be 21 levels in the current test you measure how many "beeps" a person is able to reach. Yes people can go to 100, 120, 140 and perhaps 21 levels X 9- 10 beeps at each level for over 180. In my current school very few kids reach over 110 with 140 being the top score I recorded the least few years. I don't doubt some of the great scores I've read on this message board.
Actually, what knocked me out was I slipped on the gym floor when I went to turn my mate an elite cyclist did about 5 more.
I also recall Arthur Lydiard slamming the beep test as the "stupidest thing ever invented."

The modern pacer test has both levels as numbers such as 150. As I'm sure your aware the old pacer would have you run back and forth 8 or 9 times inside of each level. Now it will tell you "end of level one end of level two" but every 5 beeps it will also say what count it's up to. It's not a knock off pacer it's just the new version and the one required in many states.
My best is 131 and i tied the school record (age 14).

The recording is typically structured into 21 'levels', each lasting around 62 s. Usually, the interval of beeps is calculated as requiring a speed at the start of 8.5 km/h (see format table), increasing by 0.5 km/h with each level thereafter. The progression from one level to the next is signaled by 3 quick beeps. The highest level attained before failing to keep up is recorded as the score for that test.
There are 21 levels however within each level there are multiple laps. Level just indicates when the test gets faster. So you don't score level you score the number of laps

like someone said previously the key is are you taking the 15 or 20 meter pacer test. 20 meter is standard for older kids like middle school and high school.
no one keeps track of levels, you keep track of laps which is every time it beeps and you make it that is a lap.
for 6-7 graders I have seen a few kids get around 120 because they are soccer players in pretty good shape.
when I was in college I ran it one time in class after finishing a 1k workout and got to 130 without really straining, it was more awkward than anything to keep turning. I was in low 15 5k shape but not a speed guy.
I'd imagine any good college miler could go for a pretty long time if they actually wanted to.
In D1 soccer we used this as a fitness test quite often. We used to start at level 8 (or 72 laps) because my coaches considered the previous 7 levels to be a waste of time and akin to a warm up anyway. I got up to low 160s on several occasions. One of my teammates ran 168. When I used the full test I think I only got to 155 or so. My mile time was over 5:20 at the time and I would have run around 19:30 for a 5k. However almost all of my fitness workouts incorporated shuttle runs and I found that being efficient in turning was just as important as being a good runner for these tests. The current highest documented score is 217 if I recall correctly and that was set by a scandanavian soccer player. I bet a distance runner with some practice at turning would crush the test.

I have my test today and the highest I got was 62
Level 11 whilst in 5:30 1500/sub 21 5k shape.
