To respond to some of the questions and comments posted -

Wayzata is one of the largest high schools in Minnesota with approximately 3,500 students in 9 - 12. The coach has been there 30 years, knows what he is doing and they traditionally have over 100 runners on their cross country team each year.

Old School Steve is right. Wayzata has a very strong middle school feeder program. When team practice begins in mid-August the middle school team and the high school team practice together, so you have 7th and 8th graders exposed to the high schoolers, which helps with motivation and development. The high school team even puts on a cross country jamboree for 4th, 5th and 6th graders each spring that is very popular and creates interest and enthusiasm in the elementary schools.

Wayzata has two more races on their schedule for distance events. With a fair number of runners in the 5:00 - 5:10 range, it is possible they could end up with 40 or more sub 5:00s by then end of the year.

Finally, I agree with the posting about The Woodlands and 20+ under 10:00. Definitely impressive and worthy of lots of discussion vs. 40 under 5:00.

If you really want perspective, I'm betting St Patrick's School has at least that many guys go sub-5:00 every year.

These 16 runners are the only 16 runners that ran for Dana Hills. I know that there were several other sub 5 runners who didn't compete in this meet (Especially Juniors and Seniors who didn't quite make that upper tier you see above). I will try to get the exact number out here quickly.
The Dolphins are Deep (pun intended).

This team may not have as many sub-5 minute guys as Wayzata's 37, but definitely has an edge in quality! Their third guy 4:12!? Wayzata's best miler(4:21 1600m)would be FOURTH guy on this team. Interestingly, their freshman/sophomore times are almost identical to Wayzata's frosh/soph's. Future looks good at both schools!! (At a rival school I coach at in Minnesota, we had a sophomore run 4:30/9:49) As another poster mentioned, it's really hard to compare depth. Wayzata definitely has a TON of good milers, if you count sub-5 as somewhat of a standard. And yes, they could field 5 pretty good XC teams, that could compete favorably with teams in many states (excl. CA, IL, NY, OR, etc.) Whatever criteria you use, Wayzata has a great program put together by Bill Miles.

I ran against Wayzata in highschool. They would roll into cross country meets in a double decker buss. Kinda pissed me off actually.

Actually, they have two others that didn't run the mile in that meet that ran 4:19 and 4:21 earlier in the season I noticed from the CA state lists. So they have a guy that ran 4:23 open and isn't even an alternate for the 4x1600m. Keep in mind these aren't miles, they are 1600m times, at least for CA.

I doubt Danbury CT has had 37... but I would bet that one of their teams in the last five years has had 20ish under 5:00. Anyone know the exact number?

What I meant was that they (apparently) have 37 boys under 5:00, so five teams of SEVEN ranked just by 1600 time would make the last team of seven right around 4:55-4:58 presumably (last boy being number 35 on the team) and when I ran that fast I was a 10:30-35 3200 runner so that should easily be in the 17:00-17:30 range on XC 5k ...

The "last" team of FIVE varsity teams of seven would not win Invites (unless a weak Invite), but they would definitely be able to beat some Varsity teams who just field ONE squad.

What I find most impressive is what the coaching staff at Wayzata must be doing to keep so many kids out. Imagine being a junior in high school, running 4:53 and being 34th guy on the team. In most programs that kid would quit. From what I hear, the atmosphere around the Wayzata program helps kids enjoy running and working hard.

Here\'s an old thread with some interesting stats. South Eugene had 22 runners under 5:00 with a much smaller student population.
