But of course you are gonna say Rupp wasn't going all out. Yeah, if he wasn't going all out he would have won instead of placing second.

Chelanga getting 27:28 means Rupp is capable of a 27:25. But Chelanga was smart and did it in a race that was set up for him. Rupp saw that opportunity go bye-bye.

The good thing is Rupp is also a smart guy. When he gets the next opportunity he will ask for a race to be set up for him go 27:25. Of course, if you were his coach you would ask the organizers for Amreican Record pace to which they would respond, "How have you not been fired."

Rupp will b capable of low 27s in the future at least-hopefully by 2012.

Again, YOUR logic amazes me! The other poster said Rupp's performances over the last year show him "capable" of a low 27 10k. He did not say Rupp is "ready" for a low 27:00. See where your logic is warped? Again, Rupp will own the American 10k record within 18 months.

If we're going to play the logic game R-Tip, consider that the same year Rupp ran 2733, he also ran 1330. He's now 15 seconds faster than that for 5k, so doesn't it follow that he should be at least 15 seconds faster for 10k? (probably more like 20-30) And mind you, none of those races were run with even splits. Or how about his mile time, which has dropped 3-4 seconds in the past year? The point is, his fitness has come along dramatically since he ran 2733 two years ago (as evidenced by a host of performances including 4 NCAA championships in a matter of months), and yet you make 2725 (a mere 7 seconds faster) sound like what he should be shooting for. His races this summer and next will tell for sure, but I do think he'll be able to hang with some of the Africans. It's not like he has to go with the best of them.

This is typical of everybody who has run low 27's. Yet you believe that Rupp will get the record even though he has run 27:33, 27:36,27:40 in the past two years.

You honestly do not think Rupp's fitness has improved since his 27:33? His Olympic performance? Yes. Winning NCAA XC? Yes. 13:18 indoors? Probably yes. The guy has been focused on NCAAs and the Olympic Games, not blazing a new 10k pr. My gawd, his improvement from 27:33 to low 27:00 will NOT be a wacky curve of performance. How old was he when he ran his pr? 21? If he had been solely focused on fast 5k and 10k track races he would have been chipping down his pr. However, he has had some other things on his plate... the frickin' NCAAs and the frickin' Olympics!

Does anyone know the slowest miler to break 13:00??

Keflezeghi and Salazar seemed to be the slowest Americans to be high on the US list, so I think they were right to chose the Marathon, however, many of the US runners move up in distance too soon and shy away from under distance races. Kennedy wasn't the fastest miler but he stuck at it and obviously was the greatest Amercan born 5K runner.

Falcon probably could have gone sub 13:00 and I think Webb still could. (Obviously Lagat too).

I would hope runners like Teg, Fam, Ryan Hall, Fernandez etc would work on getting thier mile down and then step up to a fast 5K in europe. Maybe its just me but I would rather run sub 13:00 than be Americas best Marathoner.

Running 27:36 in an uneven race at the Olympics mean you can run faster than 27:33 in a well-paced race, should you find one. It doesn't mean you can run under 27 minutes. Rupp will never do that. Nobody gets to be 23 and takes 40 seconds off their 10k time at that level, unless they just started running internationally.

Maybe you are right. However, Rupp's pr is 27:33, so he would be taking 34 seconds off of a time he ran when he was 21 (I think). I think he could go 27:20 this year, which would mean taking 21 seconds off his time. Difficult, but possible.

I see your point but I'm not sure I totally agree.

Get him in a fast race with better weather, no heats and I dont think its crazy to drop close to 30 secs. His 13:18 shows he's taken another step up on the track over the last two years. If he can run 13:10 he could get close to 27:00

You realize that Teg has run 3:34 for 1500m, which is vastly superior to 3:55 for the mile, right?

Nope. Bob Kennedy's PR was 3:56.21. His 3000 was much more impressive, 7:30.84, a former American record.

Kennedy career ended with a lot of frustration, but it was nearly perfect. He had the records, but no major medals. He had a race similar to Prefontaine's in the 1996 Olympics where he took the lead near the end but ended up 6th. His highest place in WC was also 6th, in 1997.

I'd like to see his progression of PRs from high school through his American records. Can anyone find them?
