keep in mind 600m still falls within range of the even occasional-long-sprinter. that is to say, as you increase the distance it isn't a uniform lowering of performance, rather there's a rapid fall-off somewhere. for bolt the 600 is approaching that shelf (he'll scrape by with a tough last 200), bump up to 800m and his time would be abysmal. so when we're adjusting this 600m question to 800m/mile it's completely different

I see your point here, but I could not name you one who has even actually tried. On top of that Bolt isn't one of the huge legged sprinters like Maurice Green, he is built like a good 800 guy (albeit a little muscular).
And to turn the question around name me one 10k guy who has run sub 21 in the 200 (or even sub 22). The debate can go on about it, but the point is there is no incentive for these people to try.

another poster provided the beijing splits and Bekele split a 12 something for a 100m. not 11, but Bekele should be able to hit 11 fresh. furthermore, if Bekele is in such great aerobic shape, then why would he lose so much time going from 200m to 400m (23/50)?
yeah you're right for wariner he'd cruise through 600 in a wonderful time and then that last 200 would be the longest 30+ seconds of his life
i imagine these fun scenarios (200m guy vs 5k guy contest over 600) to unfold in a very exaggerated version of the Nick Symmonds vs Matt Scherer (sp?) race over 600m. Scherer the 400 guy gaps Symmonds by a lot over the first 400 and symmonds runs even split 200s to come back to almost tie him.
yeah sorry should have though more about that 200... i guess i should say 23high/24, and the 400 being 50flat from a dead start, better for a relay split
yeah i did see that 12.5 split from the 10k, i was referring to people on other threads mistaking the last 100m of his 10k world record run as being 11 flat (they were looking at the wrong line... end of relay transition zone or something). but nobody's said it here! :)

over 5k bekele carrying a cat or Lukas Verzbicas?? I'd say bekele if it was a mellow cat. and bekele could just tuck him under the arm. If bekele was having trouble with the cat I think Lukas could pull it out. But that cat would need to be causing him some trouble.

If anybody says Bekele could beat Bolt in a 600m is crazy...Bolt has run 45 this season to open in the 400. If he jogged a 50 and came back in a 25 he will have a 1:15. Could bekele come through at 50 and be relaxed enough to hang on to a 25? There is no way that Bekele could ever beat Bolt in the 600m. Even if Bekele hung on until the last 50m, Bolt would open up and leave him standing still.

The question is can bekele run a 50 second 400 after running a 25 sec. 200. Answer, he could run a 23 second 200 (because I did in H.S. as distance runner) so he definately could. A 25 wouldn't be so bad for the best runner EVER and then put up a 50? He could.But barely i bet.

a 700- forget it. Bekele. 600 is the magic number for these guys. The break even distance. which is sad for sprinters. They are runners but excel with such a small amount of running. Its more like muscling than running.

The simple scenario is this:
If the race goes out in say... 50 for the first 400, Bolt is striding; Bekele is at top speed; From there, who's going to have the ability to accelerate??? Bolt! You Bekele-lover's assumption that Bolt will be swimming in Jello as his legs are heaving from the lactic acid is bogus. That's interval pace for him; all he has to do is kick it in (race instincts) and he's good as gold. As he's moving more towards the 400 now, it's not like he's a "pure fast twitch" 100/200 specialist. Lots of 400 guys run 500-600m repeats; it's not so crazy for Bolt to step it up for a 600m.

Clearly the meeting promoter would win. He would really clean up, like the anti-climactic showdown between MJ and Donovan Bailey over 150m.

He would almost certainly be an 800/1500 guy if he could run a 46x 400m; that would make him quick as some of the best 1500m runners such as Webb, Coe and Ryun. Geb's strenght is his endurance and what makes seem so quick is that when other people are tired, he is not. In the 2004 Olympic 5k, ElG exposed his lack 1500 type speed. Although, he probably has more speed than most 5k/10k guys, which I would estimate at about 50x.

1) to the guy who said "name me one sub 10 runner that runs under 155" are you a simpleton?? why on earth would a guy running sub 10 or even 10.1-10.3 ever attempt an 800??? im sure if you groomed a sub 10 guy to run an 800 he would be under EASY. I run 10.9 and I ran 2:01 in some stupid time trial off 100m training.
2) to the poster who said bekele would run under 1:15 and win easily. 2 things wrong with this you joker. if bekele could run 1:14 in a 600 I would guess he would be close to the 800m world record. think about it, thats 24, 25, 25, dont think he could close in 28-30 with his areboc capacity. duhhh
3) why do people keep saying bolt is a 100m runner, ps. he also holds the 200m record and with 6 months training could probably come close to the 400m. if you honestly think a world class 400m guy would get beat by a 5k or even 3k world record holder you need to get your head checked
4) THIS IS THE FINAL EXAMPLE. In oregon a year ago nick symonds raced (forgot his name but 45. in the 400m) a 400m runner over 600m . they tied (actually 400m guy won by 1/100) bolt is way faster then this guy in the 400m which would mean that bekele would at very least have to be faster then nick symmonds in an 800m, which he is not even close, so there ya go!!!! CASE CLOSED.
