I'd agree. I'd be stunned if he ever broke 13:00, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him drop a sub-27:20 and approach the AR in the 10k this year.

Rupp's a reverse Alan Webb. An endurance guy who's starting to show a lot of promise at the "shorter" distances (1500-3K) after years of focusing on the longer stuff. And like Webb, he's much hated and mocked for both his success and unsuccess.

Damn, you're right on Solinsky's 3K - I was just thinking of indoor times. Still Rupp's not far off (and he's posting PRs indoors), and most people consider him more of a 10K guy while Solinsky's best areas are 3K-5K.

We should all appreciate what this kid is doing. Of course there are others doing great things as well. But that shouldn't detract from Rupp's accomplishments.

As far as what is in his future. My guess is that he moves up to the marathon within the next two years. There is simply no way to be truly competitive (medal) in the olympics at any shorter distance without a world class kick. That is not Rupp's forte. He does, however, have the ability to go remarkably fast for remarkably long.

You heard it here first (or maybe not) Rupp will be joining Hall and Ritz in the 2012 marathon and may well be the best of the three.

If Rupp has a european season of racing 3K's and 5K's this summer it won't be likely. I think when Chris set that 3K PR he had 3 or 4 really good attempts in one season. Not taking away from Chris but Rupp has never been in that situation. And Chris will not be there at 10K.

boy, i don't know. i was there last night, and the first half was not particularly fast (~6:44). anyway, the close was sickeningly fast for an indoor race (maybe 4:08-09?). he looked smoother than i've ever seen him look. strong, yes, but also fast, and in control. i'd be very surprised if didn't approach low thirteen 0's this spring.

i was not a rupp "hater" before, but i damn sure wasn't a fan. i am now.

This is a good point, most people haven't really discussed that he was pretty far off pace at 3200. A euro race set up at 12:55 pace in the summer could be great for him to try and hang on like Kennedy used to do.

in summer 2007 at 22 he actually won ncaa's, ran at usatf and didn't make the team and then went into some small euro meets after usatf. i think he had 2 1500m races (pr at 337) before his 3k and 5k which i am pretty sure were his first attempts at the distance in european races in 2007. rupp will actually be 23 when the euro season rolls around so the pr's they sport at 22 are very similar, solinsky was maybe 1-2 months younger when he set his. you are definitely right about the 10k, solinsky would be beaten by rupp but 5k is a good matchup between the 2 runners. at age 23 rupp will probably be just as fast or faster (more likely in 5k than 3k) than solinsky at the same age if he gets in a good race or two.

Another thing, he is not the only IT for US distance running.

Ritzenhiem, another marathoner.

Josh Cox, a true distance runner, destroyed/going to destroy all ARs in ultramarathons, and last time I checked that is quite some distance running.

Rupp is good, i wont disagree with you there, and amazing runner, I aspire to run half as fast as he can. I'm just saying he isn't all USA has coming up.
