Has anyone attempted or completed the 800/1500/5000 triple at a meet of significance?

I was at the 73 NAIA meet- Fulton did get 2nd in the 800 to Boit and did also the run the 6 mile. Can't recall but I believe he took 2nd. 8 races including prelims over 3 days.

Has anyone even attempted that triple at the Olympic level? I know Kip Keino ran 1500 (gold), 5000 (silver) and 10,000 (DNF) in 68.

Peter Kosgei from Hamilton (DIII) might be able to pull it off at nationals if he ever tried it. I doubt he would go for it though.

It think its kind of strange to find 5000 guy doing the 800 but i think Boaz Lalang of Rend lake did 4 events in Nationals indoor and win all.800,1000,DMR,and 1 mile.

no 5000, no deal.

I am guessing El G, Webb, Ramzi, Morceli, Ovett and a bunch of could have been medal threats in all 3. It is hard to say since it is rare that anyone runs all 3 really seriously so we have to try and guess.

In 1996, Dave Cooper of Mt Union won those three events at the OAC meet and also the 4x800. His times were 1:52, 4:03, 14:51, and 7:54. He won that quadruple indoors in 1997 also. I believe his PRs were more like 1:50, 3:45, 14:17.

It is possible those guys would have a chance but in terms of actual verifiable results I think Said is the only one I can think of that has evidence to prove that he was a threat at all three distances. I don't think Webb's 13:10 is good enough, too far from a world competitive time.

Never tried the 800 at Nats, though her JR year would have been ruined by Liz Woodworth. (who beat her in the 1500 anyway) She probably could have done it her SR year.

Did the mile, 3k, 5k triple in my indoor conference meet one year. Won all three, although the 5k was a struggle. However let myself down by only managing 2nd when anchoring the DMR. Still not a bad weekends work.

I did it in college in a tri meet in 1982 at Johns Hopkins, it was a meet of significance to me, maybe not to anyone else.

1500: 3:59.7

800: 1:57.9

5000: 15:27

Most of our meets were dual/tri meets on cinder tracks, rarely had a chance to run against good competition or on good surfaces, this afternoon offered both, I took advantage of it. The three above races I ran in less than a two hour span, and at the time, all three times were PRs for me, and I only placed third in each race.

The 800 after the 1500 was not very hard, the 5000 after the 800 was very hard. We hit two miles in just under 10:00, the last 1000 meters was faster, I think my three was 14:52 and the two guys ahead of me were running away. A PR is a PR, I did lower my PR's in all three events again before end of season.

Neill Duggan from England won the California Junior college

championships in 1966 with win in 2mile,mile and 880. All events were within 2 hours.

He ran a 3:56 mile later that same year.

El G supposedly ran a sub 1:43 800m. Morceli was a little slower over the 800 (like mid 1.44) but he didn't run a ton (like 1 a year). Both demonstrated had the 5k end handled.Ramzi and Webb both have the 800/1500 end and have 13:10s or so . I don't think either will be in the race if it is a 12:40 one. But given how likely a 13:30 race is, I think both are legit contenders.Ovett won some 5k races but really didn't run them till after the peak of his career.For whatever reason the 800m/1500m guy is almost extinct on the world scene. The 1500m/5000k guy doesn't exist much either.

John Walker also has some "verifiable results" in all three, in terms of championship finishes. Bronze in the 800 in the 74 Commonwealth Games, gold in the 1500 in 76 Olympics, and 10th in the 5000 in the 84 Olympics (what might he have done in the 5000 in the 80 Games if NZ had not followed the US in the boycott?) I guess Aouita did a little better than that in those events in the Olympics and IAAF, but not a lot.

El G's best recorded 800 is 1:47. Though I'm sure he could have run faster I can't give him credit for the mythical 1:43 time trial.

Morceli I can find a time of 1:44 and 13:03 for him, so I think that would qualify.

I still don't think Ramzi and Webb could do it, but I guess it is possible in a slow race, that is why these debates are fun.
