When will the 5000m AR be broken?

Sagarin, what the hell are you talking about. Webb had the fastest 1500m and mile times of 2007. He's beaten the best in the world on multiple occasions at 1500m by exhibiting that speed in the last 200 meters you claim he doesn't have. He's ran 3:30 and 3:46, both very near or better times than what the top guys in the world can do. In the 5000, he's ran 13:10 once. And I know that 27:34 was amazing by U.S. standards, but that's so far behind what the top 5000m guys in the world can do for 10k. There is no evidence at all to think the 5000 would be his best event.

In a sanctioned time trial, under the lights at Mt. Sac in 2011 with the430miler and marijuologist the only competitors. They will trade laps and then go balzout at the bell.

The former will be fueled by Tergat's secret family ugali recipe and a prototype aggressive spike developed by Nike.

Well, he's beaten Lagat quite a few times, and he's one of the best in the world. When he ran 3:30 he beat some of the best in the world.

Fernandez ran 4 flat for 1600m. By that standard Rob Finnerty should be able to get it since he ran 4:01.09 in the mile last summer as a high school senior.

My prediction is Teg this year.

This thread just shows how good BK really was. All this talent on the track and yet no one sniffs BK.

BK's time was only a year or two away from being the world record. I think the WR was still 12:58 in 1994 before HG ran :56. He led the '96 Olympics with 2 laps to go. Led for nearly a lap, then faded to 6th.

And guess how many professional 5000 meter races it took Webb to run that 13:10?...and don't think that 27:34 is the absolute best he can do at 10000. It was his one and only attempt and it's logical to assume that he would get better and better at the 10000 and more importantly the 5000 with a few solid years of specific training under his belt. Something he really hasn't had.

Webb will never run a world class (sub 12:55) 5000. He doesn't have the build or the stride or the mental strength.

Agreed about the strength of BK's 5K performances. I did a little search to see what BK's performances in the 5K looked like other than the AR. Here's just the times he ran between the AR and 13:15:

That's 18 times under 13:15 and 14 times under 13:10! And we get excited when somebody sniffs 13:10 once or twice in their career. Kennedy's body of work at this distance among Americans will not be equaled for quite some time, I think.

He beat ONE top notch runner in the 3:30 which was Baala. He beat ONE top notch runner in the 1:43 which was Gary Reed. In the semifinal and final in Osaka and in this year's Olympic Trials he was buried by many runners -- top notch and less than top notch -- in the final sprint. Webb is very strong but he has only an average finishing kick. When he chooses not to utilize his strength and run a tactical race he has no chance against the best in the world.

I think that Shalane will break her own 5k AR in May at Stanford, if they get the right pacers.

By 2013 Solomon will have changed his name and will be competing as a master runner. When called out on it, he will produce a false birth certificate that only his sister can verify. And if anyone questions it they are just racist and jealous 18:00 5kers.

It shows that you have to be a consistent sub-13.10 runner to beat the American record. There are no such runners in America right now when Lagat seems to be past his prime.

No doubt Shalane could break her own record at 5k. Rowbury hasn't run a 5k on the track in quite awhile. Her Pr is 15:30 ish. I think breaking 15 is within her means. Not sure if she could come close to the record but she said she hopes to run a fast 5k this year so we'll find out soon enough

I have to disagree about no American being able to consistently go sub 13:10. Tegenkamp has that ability. Granted he has only done it twice with a 13:04 and a 13:07, but those two races were one of only a few stabs that he has taken at a real fast 5k over the past 2 years. In 2006 he was just coming onto the scene with his 13:04 in 2007 he spent most of his year trying to develop a world-class kick and if I remember correctly that 13:07 was one of maybe 2 5ks he ran in 2007 where he was trying to go fast. Then of course we all know about 2008, didnt see much of him til the trials and then little racing after the games. Anyway, point being if Teg were to have a season where he attempted 5 or 6 fast 5ks, I think he has the ability to go under 13:10 in 3 to 4 of them. maybe thats something we will see from him in 2010 when there isnt a major champs to prepare for.

When BK was running many of his first sub 13:10 efforts he was still in reach of the world's best. Now with so many of the world's best at 12:40-12:50, running 13:00 ish is much further from the medals. Therefore, I think many Americans with BK type talent like Hall have moved up to longer distances where they think they have a better shot at medals. Solinsky may have the talent to run under 12:58, but maybe his focus will be on the steeple instead. I don't see someone like Rupp even messing with that distance enough to run that fast. Lagat could still do it, but his age may not allow it. I think the next record will be from an American citizen from a foreign country, unless Teg can stay healthy.

Besides, if he runs a super fast 5k, the speed of the wind will blow his Q-Tip head off!!!!!
