Saw him at the Indianapolis airport--he was being transported to his plane on a wheelchair...not good.
I honestly feel bad for him.

I was staying across the hall from German and we noticed he was grabbing some very large bags of ice the morning of the race as if to ice something. We thought it was interesting and tha the might be nursing an injury.
He was running a very smart race and the way he was moving there was no doubt in my mind he would have came in the top 5. I guess the achillies could not hold out another 2k.
Does anyone know how bad it is? An achilles tear can take you out for a very long time.
Night Man, that was not a pre-race prediction because before the race Smith thought that they had a chance to win. Plus just before this comment he is referring to Vail, Fernandez, and Kosgei moving up well at the time of the injury. He implied that at this point they were looking to be 2nd or 3rd if German hadn't dropped out, when in actuality they would have been a distant 3rd.
This is not about you ! Its about German and "his" injury ? Follow the thread buddy...

OK this is weird, I walk up this morning to a terrible pain on my calf/achiles muscle. My calf tight up so much for 5 minutes, it almost made me cry, never in my life have I experience so much pain on my lower leg. Of course it isn't relevant but damn what a coinsidence.
Yes, that is just a leg cramp as someone suggested. They hurt like hell, especially if you have never had one before and don't know what is going on. I get them somewhat often. The key is to completely relax despite the pain and slowly move or pull your toes upwards to your knee. The cramp should go away almost immediately. It is quite common for people to wake up screaming bloody murder the first several times this happens.

No, but I did see something that looked like Hawaiian Punch running down the side of his leg in the video around the 5k mark. Do you think that the root of his problem could be that he runs in spikes that are too aggressive for his body and stride? This could have gradually worn the tendon down over the season and made it vulnerable to a major injury. Should he try a different spike plate? Should he put a more cushioned insole into the spike? Would it be the best thing ever?
i dont know the ramifications of his injury, but if he really was racing in a non-heavily cushioned spike plate, his coach needs to be fired immediately for letting him do this.
if i was his coach, id have him training in the brooks beast, and racing in a the nike zoom marathoners flats until he is a senior and ready to peak. then, his senior year, get a new pair of brooks beast to ensure inury avoidance, and put him in the zoom milers with a thick insole for racing. time to set records, all while being injury/piss blood free.

But a 'sudden' achilles injury is something I've never heard of (in running at least). Anyone else?
About 5 years after you reach puberty you'll be experienced enough to make that call.
They happen that way all the time.

He had crutches and the wheelchair just happened to be convenient. It was only because his team-mate insisted that he decided to hitch a ride or so I'm told.
Your coach is full of crap.
