I agree man, Ryan says people will always want to know why athletes are successful and what drives them so he just lets everyone know that God drives him but doesn't expect people to agree.

I do agree that he is an incredible runner and being deeply religious is a positive in my opinion. However, it has started to bother me. It's his job to run and when he's doing his job he should do just that!!!
Lance is religious and his "live strong" benefits cancer research because of him. Still, he seems to be able to separate Lance the athlete from Lance the prophet.
I love to read about Lance's killer workouts and watch the video of him training as it's so motivating. I never read the Hall blogs, they simply suck. I don't think they get it. I would probably be more inclined to donate to their cause if I identified more with what they do. Runners don't read training blogs to hear about the water supply in Africa(although that is very important)we run to escape the world for just a few minutes of our day.
Of course this is my own opinion. I try to do all in my power to give back and leave a small carbon footprint, it's just that I don't take it running with me.
Yes, it seems that every decent American born runners catches tons of crap on here. Webb- gets tons of hate, Hall- no love due to his religion, McDougal-see Hall, Goucher- his association with Al Sal, Rupp- nuff said,...
Culpepper, Ritz, Solinsky, etc.. don't seem to catch much of the crap on here, but they are also the least successful of the afformentioned runners.

That's a big diff btwn the Kenyans/Ethiopians/Morrocans/etc and the Americans: They don't tear each other apart.
Culpepper catches plenty of crap too. Being unsuccessful doesn't protect you from letsrun hate. Although I'll agree that being successful leaves you more susceptible to it.
On another note, it's sad that a thread on what should be a very upbeat topic for USA distance running turned into a typical letsrun bashing-fest.
Why does everyone thin he will win Boston....Granted he has a decent chance but he is no comparison to Robert Cheruiyot.....here comes the "Hall is a 2:05er" but compare his career to RCs???? Hall should be a shoo in for 2nd place though.

I have to admit that I immediately thought Hall would win Boston, but you're right: it certainly isn't a given. Besides guys like Cheruiyot, Boston is extremely unpredictable. Still, Hall must be considered at least a favorite if not the favorite. I always thought it would be a smart move for an American of Hall's stature to run Boston. Certainly he won't make the kind of money up-front that he could at London, but a win -even second place- at Boston would greatly raise his "stock", and lead to much greater exposure domestically than just about anything he would do at London. Boston is still the most important marathon in the world, at least to Americans. His time won't be as fast, but a win at Boston would be huge. It will be very exciting to watch Boston this year, and I hope more of our elites sign up!
Hall running the Boston Marathon will be great for the sport. Train hard, smart, and continue to keep Christ first!

I wish the best for Hall and I believe it's good for the sport for an American "icon" to run and be competitive in Boston. But five hard marathons inside of 23 months is too much, and Boston really saps the legs, especially for the bigger guys, with all of its downhill pounding. I sincerely hope Hall isn't curtailing the rest of his career. Yes, there have been exceptions like Rodgers and Baldini over the years, but they are the exceptions, not the norm.
how does anyone know that he will be favored for 1st or second without knowing the field? lets just throw some possible names who may or may not be halls competition.

these are just some names off the top of my head that would have a decent chance of beating hall, even if hall ran well. and then there are many kenyans and ethiopians who could develop into a great marathoner by april, japan, morrocco, each have a few top runners.
of course boston wont get all these runners, i am just saying how can we pick hall to win or get 2nd or 3rd without knowing the field? unless you think hall can beat anyone which on a given day he may be able to, but it would be an upset.
