I've got four years to slowly get ready for it and not too many responsibilities or duties except to myself. Count me in as dreaming about it.

Qualifying for the Marathon trials is a goal of mine. I just graduated college. I am working a shit job and am running high mileage (I hit 140 this summer).
I would seriously consider relocating and training hard with other like minded individuals. I am completely serious. Living the life with others would help. I ran mid 30 minutes for 10k in XC in college.
Lets go get 2:19.

I just graduated from college, ran in the 33:50s for 10k (female), and am looking at the 2012 marathon trials as a goal. I'll never make the olympics and am not going to put my life on hold and postpone starting a career to facilitate an optimal training schedule, but I am going to keep training seriously. The experience of qualifying and running in the trials is definitely worth a couple more years of effort to me, and IMO a respectable goal to strive for even if you know it's the end of the line.
Why not try for the 10K trials? Your times put you in the ballpark.(32:45 A standard and 34:00 B standard this time around) Not as many miles. Plus you'd be competing in Hayward Field.
I coach plenty of post-collegiate women who wish they ran 33:50 10kms in college. Most are now running sub 2:40 in the marathon.
Check out the bios. of half a dozen American women who ran similar times to you in college and you will see most dropping 30 seconds a year. That means several have run sub 32 by the time they were 26.
If you've got your mind made up about the marathon, fine...
33:50 equates to a comparable time in the marathon of 2:38.
Will you be relocating to altitude? If you work full-time now through 2009 (save your pennies) and switch over to part-time in 2010 then you will be able to safely and sanely put in 110+ mile weeks. Race Chicago in 2010 and 2011 for a qualifier and we'll see you at the U.S. Women's Olympic Marathon Trials in 2012.
Have you got a financial support system in place? How about friends and family that will give you a loving (and not a judgmental) environment?
If you want the fastest times possible and to have no regrets, you should relocate to high altitude.
I would love to pull a Christine Clark. She was a full-time physician-pathologist who ran only 70 miles a week on her treadmill in Alaska in preparation for the 2000 Olympic Marathon Trials. She took everyone completely by surprise and won. Like myself, she also had a mediocre college running career. She may not have been able to compete with the Ethiopians, but who cares? Comparing her to the Ethiopians is like comparing apples to oranges. Dr. Clark was noted for saying that she wanted to make a living with her "head" and not her legs. She also did not have the entourage of so many of the athletes today. She made the Olympic team all by herself. If I ever have the chance to make the Olympic team, I would prefer to do it the old-fashioned way without all of the high-tech gadgets. In fact, I refuse to put off my medical studies in pursuit of my goals. I plan to graduate from medical school in 4 years (not 4.5 or 5). Even though it may seem far-fetched for me now, the Olympic dream never dies. I keep my little dream to myself most of the time, as most people would never understand. I am not flashy or eccentric, I just work my ass off. One of these days, I am convinced that my hard work will soon pay off. All that I really need for success(on my own terms) is an entire year without injuries.
I will run the 5k in London and WIN.
Cody Clark + Lou Snelling = London
I have this silly goal of running the 800m but just for the fun of it. I figure even if I only ran 2:10 and 35 miles a week, I wouldn't care.
I'm 38 years old and just starting out again (actually, did some jogging at regular pace every 2 days for 20 minutes for the last 7 months). I did some extremely slow jogging today thinking it would help to build my aerobic base (about 4 miles in 50 minutes w00t!). Apparently, Norredine Morceli ran 10 minutes per mile on recovery runs and I read someone saw some Kenyans jogging in Colorado around 9 or 10 minutes per mile.
After several months, I might start doing strides, then hills, then easy intervals.
My goal would be to do one session per day and have only 3 harder days per week. One day with 5 minutes slow then 1 minute faster run for 20 minutes (fartlek trying to hit 165 bpm), one day at faster than usual pace for 15 minutes (around 145 bpm) and one interval session with some 300m.
The rest will be extremely slow jogging. I'll see how it goes.
Hey guys- I've got an update on Cody Clark's preparation for the 2012 Olympic Trials. As many of you know, Cody suffered an injury last fall after a great start to his cross country season. He outkicked Max King and Milos Metric to win his opening race this fall, but then suffered a stress reaction.
But - he's back healthy now and opening his outdoor season this weekend. We're looking for about a 13:3x as a good solid effort...
He ran one 800 this indoor season in 1.49.8x
It's gonna be a great year - thoughts???
Damn cuz - I didn't realize he was still at it -
those are sme nice times**
Where does it say that the OP is Cody Clark?
It's not -
Any discussion of 2012 London must include Cody Clark at this point - They guy is so full of undeveloped talent- and he has a great coach I. Snelling.
That's good to hear -
isn't he with that Jacob Hernandez - Milos Metric - Jake Morse - Austin-based training group.
I think I'm gonna like house-sitting.
Uh - Yah.
Cool.
Slowman kills all threads.
I saw him run that 1:49 in Houston - looked smooth
i am going for the team handball/archery double.
I thought you meant how many people are going to try to live until then to see if the world ends. I'm down with that.
So how's the OP doing? Still running?
